I worked at Barrick Gold full-time

    Pros

The perfect place to build up your career and implement ideas.

    Cons

Talent Management needs to go back to what it used to be, not just for ego.

    Advice to Management

Supervise Talent Management practices locally in order to guarantee the establishment of core principles of the organization.

I have been working at Barrick Gold full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Its a global company with high standards
Site accomodation is world class and the food is great
Every employee is a safety champion. Safety is not left to Safety department alone, but everyone is involved. This in my opinion is a great thing. It inculcates the safety culture in everyone, so as the Safety tagline goes " Everyone Going Home Safe And Healthy"

    Cons

Sometimes it fails to retain the best talent. This maybe just on my particular site.
Lots of people are interviewed, but often things fall through the cracks when remuneration is discussed.

    Advice to Management

Management can do better in attracting and retaining the best, talent. They have done a lot already, but there definitely is room for improvement.

    Pros

If you enjoy working in a large global complex and challenging environment then Barrick is the perfect place to provide you that opportunity. Highly intellectual employees and great leadership. You would enjoy some great learning opportunities and the diverse culture in the organisation.

    Cons

Changing environment as its driven by commodity market. However I would still recommend this place highly to work.

"Top of their game within the mining industry"

I worked at Barrick Gold full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The Mining industry is tough. The hours are long, mining sometimes means being bused 1-2 hours each way to the mine site and work life balance is hard. Most people in the Nevada mining industry understand this, however the way a particular mining company treats its employees can make all the difference. In my experience in the time I worked for Barrick Cortez, they genuinely cared about their employees. They paid well and treated there employees with respect. They have a proactive safety culture and encouraged employee participation. Overall the experience was positive and rewarding.

    Cons

Mining can be a dangerous occupation by nature. Long hours, work site is not always close to where employees live. Work life balance is difficult.

    Advice to Management

Keep listening to your people and stay engaged with the culture.

I have been working at Barrick Gold full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great company to work for - if you keep at it, you will be recognized and progress
In 8 years the longest I have been a role is 2 years, lots of opportunities if you walk the extra mile
Global player, lots of travel, lots of culture, lots of diversity, lots of different technologies
Excellent broad development opportunities for young early-career graduates
Pay is top quartile, incentives are good, equity/ shares incentives even better
Long hours and tough conditions, but very rewarding
Strong drive towards technology and innovation - participation is encouraged and rewarded
Robust safety culture - the leaders are authentic about us all " ... going home safe & healthy every day ..."
By far the most rewarding employment experience in my 30 professional working years all over the world

    Cons

A small power block is destroying the fabric of the company - person by person, it's such a pity
People that ask questions shouldn't be labeled as resistant to change
You don't have to be a Partner to contribute or add value
Work-life balance is a challenge - I don't mind the long hours and weekend work, but if I can't take my vacation year in, year out - we have a problem?

    Advice to Management

Top leaders should listen to trusted, proven and seasoned staff who will be honest about what's really going on, not just their little clique and entourage whose primary mission is to build an empire
Too many Chefs in the kitchen - we need doers - analysts, operators and maintainers - why do we always cut staff at the delivery level - people doing the real work, and then employ more executives and senior management?
A small clique of people going around using the Chairman's and COOs names in vein, names-dropping and abusing referent authority seems to be the name of the game .... It creates a culture of fear that will unravel all the excellent work that the COO and his team are doing

I have been working at Barrick Gold full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Some global exposure. Travel to some cool places.
    Co-workers
    Peers
Benefits are decent. But most companies offer the same.
Pay is average. Only big money if you are a partner. Which will never happen.

    Cons

Employees are overworked. 70 hour week seems to be minimum. Unless you are a VP.
Any promotion is based on if you are "liked" by the in crowd, not on performance. HR used to be so much better. Now they just take orders from COO or chairman and do not care or listen to the employees.

Barrick lacks any real long term direction. Chairman just speaks in cliches and tag lines for the press. Any initiative is always a short sited flavour of the month idea that costs the company millions.

    Advice to Management

Fear is the COO will become CEO. Say goodbye to Barrick's head office in Canada if that's the case. Only the President is Canadian, the majority of the Executives and the chairman are American. Head office will end up in DC close to McCrystal offices or in Denver (Newmont). Another Canadian company's demise.

I worked at Barrick Gold full-time

    Pros

Mostly good coworkers on the staff and middle level.
    Benefits in line with competitors.
    Good portfolio for immediate future.

    Cons

    Variable quality of senior managers.
Pay below industry standard consistently by 10-15%.
Low flexibility and no career mobility.

    Advice to Management

Remove bad eggs and bad managers. They burn their employees out quickly and cause high turn over. Pay your employees competitive wages.
