Technical Account Manager

Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. For instance are you met with blockades, enthusiasm, dread, etc?

Actions Do Not Match What They Preach

    Apr 23, 2021 - Project Superintendent

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Good projects to work on Friendly clients Variety of projects so not a lot of repetition

    Cons

This group opens their company meetings with long, rambling prayers, has office Bible study and prayer time during the week. Then they treat their employess with disrespect and disdain. The boss in SC is demeaning, intimiding and blames employees for his mistakes and failures. The owner in FL is rude and lacks integrity. They do not pay employees, subs or other financial obligations as they agreed to. There are no benefits. Every few months they have a crisis and change the employee setup, usually starting all over with new people.

    Crossroads

    Pros

Base has an amazing product that is a true leader and disruptor when it comes to sales force automation. Enterprise market is wide open for the taking. The people who work here are passionate and hungry for success. Great benefits and growth opportunity. Base is an amazing company with great mission and is executing on its vision.

    Cons

Recent leadership change has shifted sales focus from small business to Enterprise. The entire small business team has been going through dramatic change without much support. There also has been a reduction in the marketing investment for the small business team making quota attainment very difficult to reach. The job requirements for those roles have changed and the mid level leadership has shown it is incapable of mitigating this change because they are very green and inexperienced. The mid level managers have failed to help train, mentor, and lead the small business team through the shift in long term business objectives. Most of the team has been left out high and dry - the attrition rate over the past 6 months has been very high because of the the poor leadership amongst these teams. This has led to very low moral and almost zero confidence in mid-level leadership.

    Pros

Huge opportunity for advancement, career growth, and honing your skills. In three years I have had as many promotions. Many of my peers have been promoted internally or used Base as a springboard to get amazing jobs in other organizations. Expect to be surrounded by professionals who are hungry to become experts in everything they do. The people here are brilliant and driven. Everyone is happy to help out in any way possible but always holds their peers accountable. There is a work hard play hard culture built on trust and autonomy. This is a tight knit team that forms deep relationships. I moved out here with no friends and now I have a family. No joke, I have been to weddings, found roommates, best friends, ski trips, etc etc.

    Cons

Nothing worth having comes easy. There are no free rides here and everything must be earned. To put it bluntly, middle performers are going to have a really tough time here. Constant change. We a scrappy business doing battle against juggernauts in a very crowded space. Things move fast and change is constant. Turnover... Unfortunately, because of the first two points, there is a decent amount of turnover. Everyone says they want a fast paced environment and a real challenge but in reality, it's not for everyone.

Potential is there, but MUST 'play their game,' chug the kool-aid w/o question, etc..

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Deserving of more than a single star based on the fact that the majority of people here are exceptional, both during work hours (often 12+ hours daily though) and outside the office The product is at or near the top amongst several dozen other up-and-coming providers trying to disrupt the space dominated by Salesforce. The dev team is superb, which will keep the company moving upward regardless of how toxic working there M-F can be Decent 'perks,' but nothing special

    Cons

It's hard to emphasize the level of toxicity that almost anyone not in leadership experiences on a daily basis. The reward for high performance is being left alone, with exception to monthly shout-outs. Even then you're still likely to get an earful about the things you're not doing perfectly Leadership thrives on instilling fear, enforces random new initiatives based on nothing tangible, and sets unattainable goals which contributes to the significant turnover. Direction is inconsistent and erratic, very little clarity around decisions- but don't dare speak up about something you may not agree with 100% or you'll happily be replaced Many of the tenured employees are young and not experienced enough to know better, that there are companies that actually treat you like you matter

    Dude, maybe it's you?

Dec 6, 2014 - Account Executive in Palo Alto, CA

    Pros

    - The CRM landscape as a whole is VERY ripe for disruption. - CEO strongly understands where his competition lacks and exposes their weakness by re-thinking features. - The product team in Krakow is very talented, hardworking and visionary. - Top notch benefits and pay for an early phased company. - Lots of opportunity to grow because everyone always leaves.

    Cons

    - I have never seen a turnover rate this high. Nearly 90% of the original 2012-2013 US staff churned. - Equity is nearly impossible to attain. People moved across country and dedicated 2+ years and still nothing. - Leadership subscribes to the dichotomy that great products sell themselves - fantasy once you hit Mid-Market. - Co-founders tell recruits anything to get them onboard. IE: Office location, growth, titles, salary and even revenues. - Quality assurance on the product team is a very low priority as CEO has strict release schedules - everything breaks. - Very little transparency. We had a business team of 20 and could barely hold "All Hands" quarterly. No excuse. - Very few (1%) of employees have CRM experience. Feature releases often do not make sense to real sales people.

    sinking ship or burning building?

Dec 11, 2017 - Sales in San Francisco, CA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

great product, amazing people, mediocre free lunch, solid benefits

    Cons

When there are problems, lots of people have to say something before they are talked about, but nothing ever happens. The attrition rate was nearing 60% when I left. When this was brought up to the *people* who should care *they* said, in an all-hands "this is not something that worries me." People are unhappy there. The pay is not up to par whatsoever with other companies. You don't get equity... You are expected to work far too hard/much for such little pay to be working in such a sad place - it just feels like the wheels are spinning there, sometimes backward. It doesn't help that there are three offices, one in Poland (many people never even communicate with the different countries), one in SF and one in Mountain View one is depressing, it's giant, and there are maybe 20 people there, it feels like a deserted, dark, empty & abandoned city. The SF one is cramped and has broken doors and stained carpet and lacking any character. There really isn't much of a culture. Everyone seems to be too afraid to say anything to the CEO, which is a shame because if there were people who could collaborate well and actually be willing to make some REAL changes to the company there's a chance that it could really go somewhere.

    Pros

-Innovative, disruptive product that is unlike any other competitor -Great culture: Everyone at Base is all-in to create the best product for sales people in the world -Collaborative atmosphere where coworkers are willing to help each other to sell more and make our product better -Fast-paced, agile environment (some may consider this a con but I love the challenge) -Ability to really affect the company starting on Day 1 (All departments including support, design, marketing and sales) -iPads, Macbook Airs, catered lunches daily -Easy access right off Highway 101 (if you commute from the city) -Flexible hours -Great office, lots of space and conference rooms, full kitchen -Management in place to take Base to the next level in 2015

    Cons

-Typical startup cons, fast-paced and sometimes unpredictable (this is what you sign up for at any startup) -10-15 minute walk to CalTrain
