I have been working at Basin Electric Power full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The energy industry provides job stability as there will always be a need for energy providers. The pay is high for the region of location and the benefits offered are very good.

    Cons

Senior management hasn't received much of a refresh in many years therefore the culture has not been allowed to move forward with the times.

I have been working at Basin Electric Power full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, wages are top of the line, pension and 401k are great, working conditions are top notch, safety is key.

    Cons

Local upper management very self centered not open to new or innovative ideas. Business as usual. More cost driven than customer oriented.

    Advice to Management

Be more transparent. Garner trust instead of handing down dictatorial ultimatums. Make sure each group has goals within its group and stick to them.

I have been working at Basin Electric Power full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Basin has a mostly positive culture, at least in the division I work in. At the "corporate" level, Basin runs with quite a bit of transparency. Also, they are not profit driven. Benefits are quite good, especially the retirement.

    Cons

For whatever reason, some employees have quite a lot of un-deserved arrogance and certain levels of management appear to support if not encourage it.

    Advice to Management

None. This is the best company I have ever worked for. Please don't axe the defined benefit pension plan with NRECA!

I have been working at Basin Electric Power full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good pay and benefits. In 20 words that is all I have to say. They are misguided that the military way is the most cost effective way to do business.

    Cons

Stand around half the day waiting for work. Not rewarding.

    Advice to Management

    Increase worker productivity.

I have been working at Basin Electric Power full-time

    Pros

Benefits are middle of the road, on the plus side: pension if you stick it out, good 401k, and plenty of paid time off. Flex time and work from home occasionally if your supervisor allows it.

    Cons

Everyone is stuck in the good old days. Continuing to do things the way they've always been done "just because" and despite recently poor financial performance. Management lies and make poor decisions with no repercussions.

Middle of the road benefits for industry. No bonus or incentive pay. Pay is low end of industry standard. Experience (years served) is everything, few promotions, everyone gets same raise skewing pay to lazy long time workers.

    Almost cultish culture

    Advice to Management

Treat workers better, make it a meritocracy and reward those that work hard and do well. Accept that the industry in changing, commit to moving away from coal.

    Cons

A little too bureaucratic, but it is a cooperative.

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

    - Great Opportunities for Growth
    - Training Available
    - Great Pay
    - Flexible Schedule for Interns
    - Great benefits for Full-Time Employees
    - Great people to work with

    Cons

We do performance reviews once a year, but (observing) it seems like it goes in one ear at HR and out the other. They base everything off of number of years, not performance - so you won't get promoted until HR feels like you have the years to back it up (even if you perform at that level) or raises aren't based on performance. It's frustrating to see.

    Advice to Management

Try to add performance based pay. A lot of people deserve higher pay/positions based on their work, not just their years of service.
