I have been working at Bates White Economic Consulting full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Junior staff are exceptional thanks to fastidious recruiting. Company has well-cultivated culture and some lively personalities at the top make life interesting. Experts in certain practice areas are highly respected and thus the company is able to get some of the most profitable and interesting work.

    Cons

Unfortunately, the company chases less interesting business in its less glamorous practice areas, which are headed up by ambitious experts who have neither the technical expertise nor business acumen to ever really compete with the rainmakers. Unlike in other consulting firms, very little effort is made to give consultants a wide breadth of experiences. Hence, life can be persistently unfair for juniors who are matched...

    Advice to Management

Rotate the consultants around more; be wary about accepting cases that lead to high variability in hours, as this degrades the quality of the work experience for most employees.

    Pros

-Management is very transparent -Management strives to make the company both a productive business and a friendly welcoming community -Consultant classes are typically very close -All things considered, pay is relatively good. Overtime pay is offered that ensures that if you do work a large number of hours, you will be compensated for it. As of Summer 2018, an entry level consultant who averages 60 hours per week for...

    Cons

-There's a hard ceiling on the level of interesting work that consultants can do. The firm employees a relatively large number of strong economists. It only makes sense that when more interesting work arises, the economists get to do it. If you are given something more interesting, there's a decent chance it will be taken away and given to an economist. -The firm is somewhat backwards. They use out of date tech and processes...

    Advice to Management

-I think many of your processes could be drastically more efficient. Perhaps that doesn't matter, since your competing as a premium product, and pricing doesn't seem extremely important. -You pitch the company as respecting work/life balance. At the time I left, many people felt the firm was not living up to that pitch. Just continue to be aware of that trend and don't let it get out of hand.

    Pros

Management cares about ensuring that you are equipped with the tools you need to succeed. Folks are very willing to take responsibility.

    Cons

The hours can be very long for indefinite stretches of time.

    Advice to Management

Keep staffing levels sufficiently high so that staff doesn't feel as though 60+ hour weeks will continue for months on end.

I worked at Bates White Economic Consulting full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Bates White is a fantastic place to work, and anyone who says otherwise has likely not worked anywhere else. Sure, the hours are variable and can be intense during some periods, but you are compensated and rewarded nicely for hard work, and generally your colleagues are pleasant to spend the long nights with. This is not the case at most consulting firms. The work itself is fascinating for anyone interested in economics,...

    Cons

Hours can be highly variable depending on which case you are assigned to. Job satisfaction and advancement opportunities seem correlated to the practice area you are in.

    Advice to Management

Keep open the lines of communication with employees at all levels--it is great for morale.

I worked at Bates White Economic Consulting full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Project management and firm management allow staff at all levels to put forth opinions. Similarly, even junior staff has direct exposure to principals/partners and sometimes clients as well. There's a very strong culture of cooperation, and even though conflicts occur (particularly over scarce staffing resources), the culture lays the groundwork for these conflicts to be handled in a positive and respectful manner....

    Cons

The hours can be tough and unpredictable. Even though management is receptive to desires to experience different practice areas, this isn't always possible due to the need for subject matter expertise and the unpredictable workflow. These issues are more reflective of the nature of the industry rather than issues with the firm.

    Advice to Management

I would advise management to continue efforts to refine the firm's staffing levels. Because of the often unpredictable nature of consulting, this is naturally a work in progress.

I worked at Bates White Economic Consulting full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

The company's management practices are both innovative and effective. They use data to drive all their decision making and are incredibly transparent about why they make the changes that they do - there is quarterly consultant forum where we have the opportunity to ask truly anything without fear of reprisal. Bates White is devoted to professional development, and spends significant resources guaranteeing that each...

    Cons

The hours can be unpredictable. That's true of any client services company, however, and I have averaged about 45 hours a week in most quarters.

    Advice to Management

Managers can be a little territorial of more senior staff even when they have do not have work for them because of work that may be coming soon. I would advise trying to develop a system/model for determining when work is likely to arrive, and using that to make staffing decisions about consultants with bandwidth.

I worked at Bates White Economic Consulting full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

This is a great spot to learn & polish your technical skills, get exposure to new areas of business and litigation, and work with some really awesome and smart people. It may seem overwhelming at first, but it's certainly doable and sets you up for a lot more interesting career (either inside or outside the firm) than other more management consulting oriented gigs where you'll spend your days making power points.

    Cons

Hours could sometimes be long and you can get stuck on a project you may not like for a while. However, management is receptive to feedback if you make the effort.

    Advice to Management

Overall, things are good. To the degree consultants can get more diversity of experience I think it would generally help increase retention. Most folks will have the ambition to go back to school or move on at some point, but they will do that sooner if they are on repeated projects that become overly repetitious.

I have been working at Bates White Economic Consulting

    Pros

The people-- smart, talented, hardworking and fun consultants. There is little no travel and a good corporate culture, though the firm is losing that as it continues to grow.

    Cons

It's not an "up or out firm" there is no up after a few years so be ready to go to b-school/law school/ grad school. Management is not transparent about what is happening in the firm and can be non-communicative to junior staff. The hours are long, but that's the industry.

    Advice to Management

Create a better review and feedback process, the mentor system only works when sponsors have time to meet with their sponsorees.

I worked at Bates White Economic Consulting

    Pros

The offices are beautiful and the compensation was competitive. All of the people who worked there were pretty friendly and most of them were extremely intelligent.

    Cons

It was a typical consulting environment where you work ridiculous hours. Also, I felt like the company was thinking short-term at times in that they would take on cases that they knew they were going to lose just to bill hours.

    Advice to Management

My advice would be to scrap the extremely extensive review process. It was time consuming and only about a third of the staff actually took them seriously.
