    Pros

Exposure to different industries, working on intellectually challenging problems, working with bright, capable individuals. The company has a great outlook. Great culture.

    Advice to Management

Find ways to get younger consultants stronger incentives to grow within the company.

    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Bates White Economic Consulting full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

There are a lot of positive things about working at Bates White. The work is challenging and you will learn a lot, especially if you haven't done economic consulting before. The senior staff are quite open and willing to listen to input from the junior staff. The compensation is good, though when factoring in the number of hours considered "standard" it is not as competitive as other economic consulting firms. Unlike...

    Cons

The biggest downside is the workaholic culture. The senior management places little value on work-life balance and that attitude seeps into the rest of the organization. Most managers refuse to set realistic expectations with clients regarding timelines and the staff suffer because of it. Most of their junior staff are hired straight out of college and are afraid to push back on unreasonable overtime requests.

    Advice to Management

It is not enough to pay lip service to work-life balance, you need to actually change the policies and corporate culture that make having a good balance so difficult. I have worked at other, very successful economic consulting companies at which the typical work week was 40 hours and overtime was both extremely rare and compensated at time and a half. You don't have to overwork your employees to be successful.

I worked at Bates White Economic Consulting full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Project management and firm management allow staff at all levels to put forth opinions. Similarly, even junior staff has direct exposure to principals/partners and sometimes clients as well. There's a very strong culture of cooperation, and even though conflicts occur (particularly over scarce staffing resources), the culture lays the groundwork for these conflicts to be handled in a positive and respectful manner....

    Cons

The hours can be tough and unpredictable. Even though management is receptive to desires to experience different practice areas, this isn't always possible due to the need for subject matter expertise and the unpredictable workflow. These issues are more reflective of the nature of the industry rather than issues with the firm.

    Advice to Management

I would advise management to continue efforts to refine the firm's staffing levels. Because of the often unpredictable nature of consulting, this is naturally a work in progress.

I worked at Bates White Economic Consulting full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

The company's management practices are both innovative and effective. They use data to drive all their decision making and are incredibly transparent about why they make the changes that they do - there is quarterly consultant forum where we have the opportunity to ask truly anything without fear of reprisal. Bates White is devoted to professional development, and spends significant resources guaranteeing that each...

    Cons

The hours can be unpredictable. That's true of any client services company, however, and I have averaged about 45 hours a week in most quarters.

    Advice to Management

Managers can be a little territorial of more senior staff even when they have do not have work for them because of work that may be coming soon. I would advise trying to develop a system/model for determining when work is likely to arrive, and using that to make staffing decisions about consultants with bandwidth.

    Pros

Love the people and culture; everyone is very friendly and incredibly intelligent. Management is very supportive of professional development and helps with advancement. Lots of transparency; partners hold quarterly meetings where they answer all questions. Cases are interesting and thought provoking. Great community service opportunities and firm events.

    Cons

Hours can sometimes be long (as is the nature of the industry).

    Advice to Management

As the firm grows, maintain the culture and continue valuing the employees

I have been working at Bates White Economic Consulting full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

Senior management has a strong commitment to quality, professional growth of all staff, and making BW the best place it can be. There is strong mentorship for staff and opportunities to work in the different practice areas if you so desire. There are no glass ceilings at this firm and people are able to advance through the company with diverse backgrounds.

    Cons

Litigation consulting can be tough since your schedule is dictated by lawyers and judges and cases can settle before the interesting work is finished. I don't believe this is related to BW in particular.
