I have been working at Bates White Economic Consulting

    Pros

Bates White is a place where you become empowered to make your own individual contributions to case work.

    Cons

Sometimes the hours can be long.

    Advice to Management

Many managers already do this, but it is important to show employees gratitude when they work long hours or if you are satisfied with their work.

I worked at Bates White Economic Consulting full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

This is a great spot to learn & polish your technical skills, get exposure to new areas of business and litigation, and work with some really awesome and smart people. It may seem overwhelming at first, but it's certainly doable and sets you up for a lot more interesting career (either inside or outside the firm) than other more management consulting oriented gigs where you'll spend your days making power points.

    Cons

Hours could sometimes be long and you can get stuck on a project you may not like for a while. However, management is receptive to feedback if you make the effort.

    Advice to Management

Overall, things are good. To the degree consultants can get more diversity of experience I think it would generally help increase retention. Most folks will have the ambition to go back to school or move on at some point, but they will do that sooner if they are on repeated projects that become overly repetitious.

    Pros

Nice compensation Great corporate life (different firm building events) Opportunity to work in a great industry Very efficient colleagues across the company (IT, HR, office support, etc.)

    Cons

Bachelors get promoted to managers sooner than PhDs; the company added one more step between PhD entry level and Manager Managers without a degree often manage PhDs I guess bad PhD reviews made the company rebrand starting level for PhDs from Senior Consultant to Economist PhDs do all the technical work without any exposure to other areas (client interaction, management, writing reports, etc.)

I worked at Bates White Economic Consulting full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Decent salary, opportunities to work on high profile cases, and the yoga class (the question is if you have time for that if you already work 70+ hours per week)

    Cons

Ph.D. senior economists are managed by non-Ph.D. managers who do not understand economics/econometrics but want to be in control; no well-defined career path and unfair promotion system; unreasonable work hours and no life-work balance

    Advice to Management

Do not let non-Ph.D. manage Ph.D. - it makes everyone work unnecessarily long hours to clear up the mess due to mismanagement and you just get worse reports. Why cannot you trust a Ph.D. to manage cases?

I have been working at Bates White Economic Consulting full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

There are many smart people to work with; junior staff are very good at data Lots of firm sponsored events (include yoga class) Good paycheck and benefit

    Cons

Crazy hours and on call all the time (managers sometimes intentionally do not tell you about the deadlines) Highly technical work is not understood or valued by non-Ph.D. managers No client interaction No promotion after 5 years

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to Ph.D. senior consultant and help them with their career success, please!!!

I worked at Bates White Economic Consulting full-time

    Pros

The pay is good, especially if you work long hours. The benefits are great. You have great opportunity to develop some important skills by working with very smart people.

    Cons

PhDs are almost never promoted; many of them leave of get fired. Your economic skills get deteriorated, because you work a lot on data processing and cleaning. You are often managed by someone without an advanced degree: the majority of the management are not PhDs. You will have difficult time explaining them basic economic concepts.

I worked at Bates White Economic Consulting

    Pros

Meritocracy, collaborative work environment, lots of back-end support on the admin/IT side; excellent chance for exposure to clients. Collegial environment although people sometimes tend to get holed up in their offices without interacting. Not a whole lot of travel required so no problem with endless hours in the airport or in flight.

    Cons

Erratic hours, engagements are sometimes long and interminable.

    Advice to Management

    Keep fine tuning work-life-balance.

I have been working at Bates White Economic Consulting

    Pros

The people-- smart, talented, hardworking and fun consultants. There is little no travel and a good corporate culture, though the firm is losing that as it continues to grow.

    Cons

It's not an "up or out firm" there is no up after a few years so be ready to go to b-school/law school/ grad school. Management is not transparent about what is happening in the firm and can be non-communicative to junior staff. The hours are long, but that's the industry.

    Advice to Management

Create a better review and feedback process, the mentor system only works when sponsors have time to meet with their sponsorees.

I worked at Bates White Economic Consulting

    Pros

The offices are beautiful and the compensation was competitive. All of the people who worked there were pretty friendly and most of them were extremely intelligent.

    Cons

It was a typical consulting environment where you work ridiculous hours. Also, I felt like the company was thinking short-term at times in that they would take on cases that they knew they were going to lose just to bill hours.

    Advice to Management

My advice would be to scrap the extremely extensive review process. It was time consuming and only about a third of the staff actually took them seriously.

    Pros

fantastic peer group - very smart, motivated, collaborative people technically and analytically focused - opportunities to learn and develop rigorous analytic skills strong compensation and benefits package

    Cons

smaller firm means high variability and unpredictability in hours work can get repetitive across clients hard to move beyond mid-level without a doctorate

    Advice to Management

continue to focus on consultants' learning and skill development try to better manage client's expectations and time horizons
