I worked at Battelle Memorial full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Being part of their mission. Good benefits and work life balance. Working with incredibly talented employees. The company has much potential.

    Cons

Because most of their work supports the government, it feels very restrictive. The company recognizes the need to change, but is struggling to figure out how. Senior management needs to open up more or initiate some healthy turnover. HR needs a tested and proven leader who can drive change through thought leadership and depth of experience in all areas of HR.

    Advice to Management

Look at individual composition of the leadership team in a constructive but critical way. Identify change levers, create a plan and stay the course.

I worked at Battelle Memorial full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Worked in several different groups within and outside of IT group. The groups outside of IT are second to none and are world-class in my experience. IT group is probably at a maturity level 2-3 with many quality technical people.

    Cons

Management within IT group was lacking leadership and vision, creating sometimes hostile work environments. Communication was pretty bad and usually wouldn't listen to numerous subject matter experts.

    Advice to Management

Invest heavily in training your managers to become leaders. In addition, hire great leaders and people that can inspire staff to follow them.

    Pros

Best for scientists with PhDs located in Columbus Ohio. Strong tradition of applied R&D. High scientific integrity.

    Cons

Battelle is consolidating, and is no longer pursuing most contract work based outside of Columbus OH. Many staff in Wash DC Metro area have been let go.

    Advice to Management

Figure out what you want to be -- contract research only? Defense contractor? Battelle Memorial Institute? Figure it out, stick with it, and quit reorganizing.

I worked at Battelle Memorial full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Battelle has very smart people doing incredible things you've never heard of.
    A non-profit STEM education funder.
I enjoyed the business of innovative solutions.

    Cons

Battelle has had a long term problem with advertising capabilities. The company grew fat and happy on government contracts, but sole source IDIQ is a thing of the past. This change caught Battelle off guard. In an attempt to be more competitive in the market, employees are suffering. Cuts in benefits year over year for 5 years straight.

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to deny the fact that restructuring everything isn't cost cutting. People here are smar and it's insulting to say that restructuring (i.e. Eliminating) the pension benefit isn't a cost cutting measure. Battelle needs to compete to retain top talent and VRO-Ing some of the wisest talent is going to hurt for some time.
