I have been working at Battelle Memorial full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Demanding and challenging work, impressive coworkers, positive changes... the environment is energizing. Benefits are great with lots of options. Investment in labs and buildings.

    Cons

Although there is good investment now some areas had been neglected for a long while. It is taking time to make some changes. The time demands can be tough but it is exciting to be part of the organization's revitalization.

    Advice to Management

Keep pushing through the hard stuff; stay the course during future transitions; communicate with us.

I have been working at Battelle Memorial as a contractor

    Pros

The management is intelligent and personable. They help you to succeed in your projects. Friendly team atmosphere. You can work in your own office. Hours are extremely flexible. So long as you put in your 40 every week and you do your work, they don't care how you space it.

    Cons

It is possible to work all day and not speak to anyone.

    Pros

Good pay and great benefits. Training for certification available. Management very helpful and knowledgeable

    Cons

Few opportunities to advance. Many workers complained about last minute overtime expectations. Poor communication from headquarters, which is out of state

    Advice to Management

Develop more lower staff to fill in in case someone leaves. Hire HR representatives at satellite locations. Increase the amount available for educational advancement

I worked at Battelle Memorial as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Structured Internship program
    Good pay
    Wide variety of experience gained

    Cons

Company is making some big changes for the better. But some of the changes make the job challenging.

I have been working at Battelle Memorial full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Opportunity to work on tough challenges with some brilliant peers. Drive to stay sharp technically. Finally diversifying. Lots of internal research grants for people with defensible value propositions. Dim prospects for those who choose to complain about, and wait for, management to illuminate their daily paths.

    Cons

$3B+ in revenue begets bureaucracy even after streamlining. Serving govt constrains riskier ventures. Arrogant confidence is our greatest strength and weakness.

    Advice to Management

Emphasize more group learning sessions in addition to Battelle University soloist offers. Shift recruiting and development away from heavy reliance on converting technical experts into resource managers and marketers. Keep diversifying staff and locations.

I have been working at Battelle Memorial full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Colleagues are nice. Very good work environment. A lot of cross functional stuff to learn and a lot of people to meet. In general, it is very nice to work here.

    Cons

Just like other big corporates, heavily upper management.

    Pros

A different kind of company with a true philanthropic mission and commitment to research and science.

    Cons

Working at a satellite office makes you feel separated from the main energy of the company at the Columbus headquarters.

    Advice to Management

Support employees at remote offices at a level more consistent with employees in Columbus.

    Pros

Interesting work and proven client value. Will never have a government breach of the FAR, ethics either perception or reality as most of our competitors have, Vattelle errs on the conservative side. Is a Charitable Trust. By law some of or profits must be given back to the communities where we work. In the midst of moving to a business model cutting costs and implementing systems and procedures to generate profits. This is a pro but should have taken place decades ago. Glad it's happening now. Takes care of employees, right sizing now and early outs with good benefits offered. Best CEO we have had in ten years. Communicates with staff and stands by his word.

    Cons

Same difficulties and challenges as every single government contractor has, except perhaps those few winners dedicated 100% to only medical and healthcare IT. Again, in the midst of change, but it's for a reason: become more profitable, have more cash to give back and invest in R&D, and solve clients' most difficult problems. Lack of project time for many staff during this end of FY.

    Advice to Management

Meet your staff and partner with them even if you don't have answers to their lack of project time right now. Work together with staff to help address their desires, and Battelle expectations.
