I have been working at Battelle Memorial full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Very talented, smart, and intelligent people at staff level (equally untalented and unknowledgeable people at management levels)
    - Interesting and challenging projects
    - Good name recognition in the industry
    - Typical large organization resources and benefits

    Cons

    - Incompetent management at line, unit, and leadership levels
    - Due to lack of management training, the line managers and senior leadership do not understand the value of talent retention, professional development of staff, and collaborative decision-making efforts for the direction of the business lines
    - Solution-oriented management approach (versus need-based approach) undervalues staff talent, which translates to missed opportunities for the long run
    - No mentorship or guidance for junior and mid-level staff (mostly due to lack of professional (sometimes personal) "maturity" level required in senior staff to lead/guide junior and mid-level staff)
    - Project win and success is staff driven with minimal resources and/or very poor resource allocation practices
    - Minimal to none core competency at the organizational level and the existing or built-up capability diminishes when staff retires/leaves
    - Minimal to none acknowledgment for professional achievements (certifications, publications, awards, etc.)
    - If one is writing about a business case about "flirting with failure due to in-adaptability to the ever-changing world," Battelle is a good case study for "1970s technocracy at its best"

    Advice to Management

Try to build a core management team from within before hiring outsiders who have no understanding of the business lines that they are hired to run and no embedded commitment to Battelle. Be a part of that core team instead of watching the disasters unfolding in front of your eyes and not taking notes for "lessons learned." If you can't do any of that, consider retiring or leaving before you damage the reputation of a good non-profit organization.

There is really good talent within the organization. It is disappointing to see the competitors snatching the talent away from Battelle's toxic environment due to inefficient and incompetent management.

    Pros

Work is what you make it.
You can make your life and work really what you want it to be at Battelle. Lots of different projects, clients, and possibilities.

    Cons

Work is what you make it.
It takes an extra effort to self-drive your career here. They are not invested in laying out specific paths for employees.

    Advice to Management

Relate the awesome work we do to those that make it happen behind the scenes. Make it more real to all of us.

    Pros

A private non-profit entity with outstanding benefits. They donate all profit to charity.
Management, for the most part, stayed out of the way so you can focus on getting the job done.

    Cons

Current management running the company like a public one by cutting/reducing benefits in order to bring them back to the standard corporate pack of squeezing more out of their staff.
Can be a contractor meat shop (i.e. hire you to support an on-site contract then discard you if/when they loose the re-compete.)

    Pros

Great people to work for and great coworkers, Salary, Incentives for doing a great job, Working with Extremely intelligent and experienced people

    Cons

The work schedule- it was a modified DuPont which had pros and cons, and eventually would turn into the actual DuPont schedule which was 12 hr shifts and flip flops days and nights during the week. Hard to work with children and no family around! The benefits were pretty pricey also!

    Advice to Management

    N/A

    Pros

Good pay and great benefits. Training for certification available. Management very helpful and knowledgeable

    Cons

Few opportunities to advance. Many workers complained about last minute overtime expectations. Poor communication from headquarters, which is out of state

    Advice to Management

Develop more lower staff to fill in in case someone leaves. Hire HR representatives at satellite locations. Increase the amount available for educational advancement

I worked at Battelle Memorial (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I can only speak for the contracting side of Battelle. It's a good, stable job for a technician who wants to put in their 8.5 hours a day and go home. Management had little to no idea what their workers did for the contract and very limited contact with that staff. Decisions based on work performance were made entirely on the client's review, which could be good or bad depending on your on-site supervisor.

    Cons

Workers who achieve more than required or take on extra responsibility are not compensated in any way and there is no room for professional growth. You will never get a promotion/raise because you can never exceed your base job description of "pleasing the client." Communication between the client and Battelle management is poor, meaning that each side blames the other, nothing is resolved, and the employee suffers.

This is a corporate machine that exemplifies the worst of big companies. If you want to be respected as a human being and an adult, I suggest you look elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

Stop lying to your employees. If there is no room for job growth, don't make it a selling point during interviews. Contractors are aware they are subject to the whims of government budgets; do not pretend that everything is fine if it is not. People deserve the truth so that they can make informed decisions for their lives.

I have been working at Battelle Memorial full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Salary is great for the area, great management, great coworkers, great 401k plan

    Cons

DuPont shift work, health insurance options are very costly or cover nothing

    Advice to Management

You're doing a great job overall. If there was a way you could change the rotating shift so that you didn't flip from day to night as frequently that would be a huge improvement.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Battelle Memorial full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Battelle Memorial Institute provided diverse opportunities for employment. The company has projects from Nuclear Waste Management to inventing the Xerox process.

    Cons

Battelle is a non-profit company whose tax status precludes it from retaining the processes it invents as for profit assets. This generates churn in the company that can be unsettling for individuals looking for security.

    Advice to Management

Combining failed business units with successful ones doesn't make the weaker unit prosperous it only dilutes the profitability of the successful one.
