I worked at Battelle full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Interesting work, smart coworkers, if you get on the right team you can really learn a lot in a short amount of time

    Cons

Internal politics, red tape, and too many layers of management get in the way. Difficult to advance, as raises/promotions based on relationships more than performance

    Advice to Management

Cut down on the layers of management and put these individuals into more productive roles of market research and actually performing work that needs to be done

I worked at Battelle full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Battelle has its hands in a lot of exciting projects and opportunities to do interesting stuff were never hard to find.

    Cons

Global conglomerate is too big for management to have any idea what's going on at the low levels. Lots of effort spent on big company-wide morale boosters without any apparent effort to figure out what the masses actually want.

    Advice to Management

Try to empathize with the people in the cubicles, rather than patronizing them. Turnover might end up a lot lower.

I have been working at Battelle full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The people are really great, but have to work up against the management stream to get the job done

    Cons

The management is in a tailspin. There were several hundred laid off in Aug/Sept of 2017, AFTER a big hiring boon in 2016. As you would guess, the business line managers and above who should have been laid off were kept, while the good ones or promising senior scientists were let go, some after a couple of months on the job after being recruited from other places.

    Advice to Management

    1) Tell employees what is going on--don't sugar coat it. 2) Don't hire only to fire. Figure out a better way to allocate the work, as there is no system to ensure that jobs are covered across divisions. 3) The business lines are too insular--and there is no collaboration across groups.

I worked at Battelle full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Some great people doing some great work to make the world a better place (not management for the most part). A great variety of projects. Good pay and flexible work environment.

    Cons

I worked at Battelle for close to ten years. It was a great company with great people many years ago. This has been changing steadily for the last five years or so. Management is awful. There is so much infighting and competitiveness within the company that it feels like every group is out for themselves rather than working toward what's best for the company and its mission to do good. Moral is awful but management doesn't seem to care or take notice.

Additionally, they have lost so much expertise and capacity over the last couple of years through a mass exodus of senior people and voluntary retirement and separation plans that the quality of work and opportunities coming in is also compromised.

There are still good people left who do good work and want to contribute, but many of those folks are frustrated and hoping for things to improve - or for an opportunity to leave. It's very sad what become of this organization.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your staff and try to improve morale. Focus on one Battelle and end the competitiveness within the organization. Limit the bureaucracy throughout the organization. Hire ethical well-trained managers and require management training.

    Pros

Amazing people and amazing work. The company has refocused on what it does best and that means over the past few years it has exited areas that are less strategic.

    Cons

Federal government as a customer is not for everyone - so some people from outside of that sphere may not like the realities that come with government work.

    Advice to Management

Keep pushing to have the best managers to nurture talent.

I have been working at Battelle full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good salary, flexible work schedules, modern work facilities, easy parking

    Cons

The easy parking is due to such low volumes of people. Battelle is selling off property and tearing down buildings just to stay afloat. However, there is constant construction going on renovating the floors of the buildings that remain. Battelle suffers from one of the worst scenarios in business - too many managers not coming to work, off on other initiatives, playing on their cell phones every time you see them - and no actual workers on site doing the actual work. Management is disengaged, communication never happens from the top down, projects are handled on a completely haphazard basis depending on who is screaming the loudest at the moment. There is no direction, no long term technology goals in place, and the technical direction from management is not there. Mainly due to the fact they are just disengaged and make it very obvious they don't want to come to work.

    Advice to Management

Resign. Get a job doing something you are passionate about and that you enjoy doing. So people know you like coming to work and contributing.
