    Pros

Teams are made up of good and supportive colleagues, which makes a negative workplace a bit easier to handle. Can be good work experience, a stepping-stone for moving on to something better

    Cons

Low morale. Upper management in charge of 'overseeing' or 'supervising' titles/brands focus on negativity and don't encourage teams, exercise blame and can treat staff harshly and condescend. It feels like school. Was subjected to fanatical micro-management/bully style. Even the smallest decision-making was taken away from editors and teams, sometimes for short periods, other times months on end. Many changes unjustified and unnecessary, which cause countless hours of delays and stress on teams, plus this eventually eats away at confidence in your work. This goes on and on, and people often quit. No questions are asked as there are no exit interviews. Perhaps HR doesn't want to know or isn't bothered. As one is more valuable than the others that leave, it seems. There is a high turn-over and as witnessed, some staff don't get replaced for months, if at all. The work gets piled on someone else on the team. Pay is really low for the amount of work and overtime. Human resources has no idea if you have any career goals and doesn't query, or encourage. They are unwilling to offer flexible work hours to parents or others with challenges. It's a hierarchy. If I had a problem I’d feel uncomfortable talking to them, like I wasn't being taken seriously, I'd be viewed as 'difficult' or there would be repercussions somehow. Staff are undervalued and little investment in good people. It's all about profits. Going freelance is a better scenario for creatives as there is less exposure to this. Not very progressive with digital media and little resources are invested in it.

    Advice to Management

Stop underpaying and reward efforts. Stop denying the turnover. Investigate what’s really going on, on the floor and CARE. Happy staff are more productive, so try upping morale, give incentives, get involved. Take cues from Branson.

I worked at Bauer Consumer Media full-time

    Pros

It's fun to watch the media types go about their business and you can take part in some of the magazines that are published by the company

    Cons

The technologies in use for the majority of the websites are outdated. There is a lack of QA and software engineering best practices are not followed.
Focus is on arbitrary coding standards and not on the quality of work produced.

    Advice to Management

Treat the website bolt on of your company as a software company because that is what it produces. Follow the practices that are widely accepted as industry best practices for software engineering.

I worked at Bauer Consumer Media full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Some great people and a decent location. Before the buyout from the Bauer family, it felt more stable and there were at least some attempts at innovation.

    Cons

Very little commitment to trying new things, seemingly little in the way of long term strategy or focus, consistent cost-cutting universally across the board without knowledge of the implications (or where they might actually do well to cut some costs)

    Advice to Management

You have some great brands. You have deep pockets. You need the people in place in senior positions to work out how these two facts go together to create a sustainable and growing media business going forward.

    Pros

Free magazines if you can get them quick enough when they are delivered
Really cant think of any others to fill the 20 word minimum!

    Cons

Management have been in place for a long time and seem unable to come up with new ideas, they always use the same people to brain storm which stifles creativity.
Unable to move forward with the times, especially poor at digital and wanting to invest in new technology.
Poor office environment, although the mice seem to love it.

    Advice to Management

Try and move with the times, it might be productive to listen to some of the younger team who have their finger on the pulse.

    Pros

    Free tea and coffee
    A few great colleagues

    Cons

    Too many managers
Too many lazy colleagues who hide behind others
Company reputation massively tarnished in the area making your job impossible
    Targets unrealistic
    High staff turnover
Management have no real understanding of what it's like being on the ground
No company perks as they are all only for the staff in London.

    Advice to Management

Hand in your resignation before you suck all the life out of all your employees.

    Cons

    Bit of a boys club
    Limited career progression
Creative personalities can lead to office politics

    Advice to Management

Open up more senior management roles for career progression through the ranks
Build up more of a culture - currently no sense of community within the comp

    Pros

If you're looking to get involved with media, this is the place. Great people, great work environment, and great place to learn.

    Cons

Getting sponsored to stay in the country is difficult.

    Pros

On the whole the people are great, hard working & show passion for what they do. As a company, the brands are well established & prominent which looks good on your CV, it's fast moving which keeps things fresh & occasionally you can spot a celebrity on the office!

    Cons

Although it's fast moving, the company lacks ambition sometimes in what it does. It lacks drive, direction & communication from above in a very competitive market.

    Advice to Management

My advice would be to listen & trust what your skilled & experienced employees are telling you

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

There are some fantastic brands in the Bauer portfolio and to work on them is great for the CV as many of the titles are still highly regarded in the industry. There are many high profile and experienced editors and art directors who you can learn an awful lot from. The offices are centrally located in the west end of London which is great for transport links and shopping and socialising.

    Cons

The management are constantly under pressure to cut costs and therefore budgets and staff as newstand magazines sales continue to fall. However rather than try and think of new and innovate ideas to reverse their fortunes they continue to bring in ex-editors and art directors to help relaunch failing titles.
Restructuring of departments into hubs creates an atmosphere where creatives and sub-editors work across numerous titles and have less ownership and pride over their magazines.

    Advice to Management

Constantly degrading the quality of the magazines will of course lead to lower sales
