I worked at Baxter (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Baxter is a great company with excellent benefits, well recognized diversity and community involvement, and a dominant position in most markets in which they participate. They are leaders in IV solutions research and development and thought leaders in many areas of medical products space.

Baxter is a very large manufacturer and is excellent in manufacturing performance. Very focused and in control.

Excellent quality and predictable results in financial performance.

Baxter is full of long career people very dedicated to their work.

    Cons

I didn't chose Baxter; they acquired my long time employer Baxa Corp 5 years ago. Despite much discussion of how each organization could learn from the other, Baxter's style was very different and Baxter's systems, standards, and thinking were pushed into place from above over several years. The integration was rushed through and left incomplete once a larger acquisition took the attention, resulting in disconnects in approach and thinking which caused ongoing difficulties.

I have heard from many at Baxter and experienced firsthand that "everyone does just one thing" leading to lengthy processes involving many players. Activities that took a small team at Baxa went through multiple departments, each with a queue and competing priorities at Baxter. There were signs and promises of streamlining to come under recent management changes.

Baxter really is not an innovator, particularly in medical devices. Baxter acquires innovative companies but does not let them continue to innovate in the long term. Once the integration brings Baxter's bureaucracy and requirements, the innovation slows to a standstill and new acquisitions are sought.

Baxter is very focused on solutions for infusion, and in that environment it is difficult to justify and advance a device product innovation. The return for solutions is so much greater that even great ideas in the device side simply don't get attention.

Corporate mandates are far reaching and overlapping resulting in confusion in execution. This is particularly true of responses to regulatory findings.

Aversion to risk leads to indecision and inaction. Projects operated on a start-stop basis at budget cycles, resulting in delays and loss of key people. This may change under recent leadership changes but this is a large ship to turn.

I do not doubt that there are many opportunities for those at large Baxter facilities, or willing to relocate. If you are acquired and like where you are, your opportunities may be limited, particularly in the touted "technical advancement" path. My experience based on the CO site is that promotion simply does not happen. The only advancement of this sort I saw was individuals leaving a higher level position creating an opening.

    Advice to Management

    Streamline processes.
Address advancement without internal job hopping.
    Improve integration of new acquisitions.
Maintain innovation, particularly in the device space.

I have been working at Baxter full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits, health insurance is great

    Cons

Not enough time to spend with family, overtime is always needed. Proper staffing in some departments is lacking.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing. However, increasing the staffing in certain departments would be a good way to decrease the amount of time needed to be on the job.

I have been working at Baxter full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

My management is excellent - always feel like they have my back. New dress policy is nice (can wear jeans) and during summer they have "Summer Hours" (work longer M-Th and half day on Fri). Have a lot of amenities onsite in Round Lake (drycleaning, oil change, fitness center, Starbucks barista, etc). Working with sites globally is an amazing experience - get to see a lot and expand my network.

    Cons

Being part of Corporate America - there seems to be lots of cooks in the kitchen. Good initiatives to improve the company but with new management last year (2016). expectations seem unrealistic. Direction from executive level makes corporate group work towards one goal and the plants another. We are both told to "get it done" - but that conflicts with the same resources.

    Advice to Management

For the new management - make sure to take care of your engineers at the plant. Lots of talent there, but many leave because they are burnt out.
