  1. "Under-resourced but full of good people"

    StarStarStarStarStar
    Current Employee - Reporter

I have been working at Bay Area News Group full-time

    Pros

On a good day, this is a top-notch organization that works to produce news of interest and value.

    Cons

Resources are spread thin and so employees are overworked, underpaid and not always able to do the investigative work that the public needs and that's rewarding to a journalist's career.

    Advice to Management

Treat the smaller newspapers in the chain as bureaus and not as second cousins. Work to create a more holistic and bigger vision for the entire network of newspapers.

I have been working at Bay Area News Group full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

One of the last real newspapers in the Bay Area

    Cons

Don't expect a raise and don't expect anyone to ever thank you for what you do, especially when dealing with editors in San Jose.

    Advice to Management

Stop treating employees like numbers. Occasionally ask yourself why you got into journalism.

    Doesn't Recommend

I have been working at Bay Area News Group full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Immediate colleagues are hard-working decent people

    Cons

The quality of the paper is terrible, extremely poor managed. The hedge fund that runs the place is only concerned about squeezing out more and more profit

    Advice to Management

    Bring in some competent managers

    Pros

always interesting and fun. Lots to learn and great colleagues. Never boring. Get to see and do lots of different things. Dedicated staff.

    Cons

The salaries are not the best. The management can be good but the head honchos are bean counters and only care about the bottom line.

    Invest in the news staff.

    Advice to Management

The wrong people are leading the charge into the digital age. Upper management, try as they might,, not looking to the people equipped to usher in change. A little out of touch.
