I have been working at Bean, Kinney & Korman full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You get immediate experience on large matters, either through going to court or handling transactional deals. The culture is very relaxed, happy hours every Friday, with few people working in the office late or during weekends unless really needed. There is not a lot of fake face-time. Vacation time and quality of life is encouraged. Many of the recent laterals worked at bigger law firms and it seems the firm is doing very well in getting larger and larger matters, so hopefully they can maintain the small-town vibe. No jerks from what I can tell.

    Cons

The downside of a smaller firm is that you need to get up to speed on various topics quickly, and there is not always a net. They don't put junior associates on doc review, you are forced to carry your weight early. That can be challenging, but in the long-run it seems rewarding. Also, there is an emphasis on marketing and client development that you don't see at all other comparable firms.

    Advice to Management

Improve the IT, including in the office and through working remotely.

I worked at Bean, Kinney & Korman full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people that you are surrounded by. If you work hard, you will be rewarded. A lot of small perks that make you feel appreciated - gift cards, holiday parties, lunches Friday happy hours,, etc. Great work/life balance. Good health benefits and PTO. Overall, somewhere I enjoyed working!

    Cons

IT issues. Some bureaucracy (but when isn't there some in legal?!). No working from home.

    Advice to Management

Provide some ability and flexibility to work remotely.

I worked at Bean, Kinney & Korman full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They have a nice incentive system to make up for the lack of pay you will receive as an attorney.

    No maternity leave.

You will eventually be paid after the Partners take most of your money, so if you like making money and being altruistic and giving it to others, then take this job.

    Happy hour on Friday.

    Cons

Legal staff, stay far away from this place as possible. The dichotomy between attorneys and support staff is the worse I have ever seen. Gladiatorial combat will likely break out at one point - not kidding.

Paralegals be prepared to be a secretary and answer the phone, you will not receive actual work.

    Hostile work environment.

No mentorship. Be prepared to learn everything yourself and ask an equally non-trained attorney for advice.

    Advice to Management

There are 15 Partner Level attorneys out of 35 attorneys. Only 10 Associates with the rest being B and C class share holders - I have never seen a more top heavy management system ever.

Actually prove people are competent for their positions. White hair does not equal knowledge. Attorneys unable to use computers properly (i.e. Word) is inexcusable.
