I worked at Bechtel full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A variety of experience and projects are possible when there is a healthy backlog of work.

    Cons

Awful employee performance rating system which pushes employees toward spending vacation hours to support company-targeted volunteer organizations.
Little job security. When project work runs out, they lay off just like other engineering firms.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the employees who are closest to the work. Otherwise, management makes decisions without employee input.

I have been working at Bechtel full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Yearly bonus typical

    Regular reviews

    Diverse culture

    International and domestic work... sometimes

    Available free training - online

Established mechanism for your coworkers to recognise you for hard work.

    Cons

You should know, this place has hurt my multiple decade career significantly more than it has helped. I only offer this so you know something about me as you read this.

There are many happy and successful people at Bechtel, just ends up that I am not one of them at the moment. This pertains to my personal experience while attempting to become one of those people.

If you are looking for advancement or just recognition and you depend on your hard work and dedication to predominantly speak this for you... you will more than likely be dissappointed, if you don't have a fairly well developed social game... this may not be the place for you.

If you can attain a higher level Bechtel mentor to guide you, navigating Bechtel's social and political maze can be done without much knowledge, hard work or dedication.

I have seen the perception of accomplishment take front seat to actual accomplishement on several occasions.

I may be a little disgruntled but I think I am mainly just dissappointed. I aimed to high with my hopes and expectations and they moved the target low. Well, writing this has been therapeutic ☺ ... thanks for reading it.

    Advice to Management

Realize there are problems... fix them. If you think there are no problems, look harder.

I have been working at Bechtel full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

There are a lot of ways to advance within Bechtel if you are willing to put in the time and work. In the home offices you have flex time and 9/80 schedule. In the field it is 4/10s & an 8 (overtime opportunities). Great benefits, matched 401K, 4 weeks PTO, and education reimbursement. Offices all around the globe and many opportunities to travel and work overseas.

    Cons

They expect you to come early and stay late without pay to show your dedication to the company. Bechtel is a project based company and they frown upon employees that want to stay in the home office and not relocate to the jobsites to get more experience. Do not work at Bechtel if you are not open to moving every 3-5 years for new projects.

    Advice to Management

Be more transparent with your employees in order to keep from looking secretive.

I have been working at Bechtel full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Fairly good EPC company. Opportunity to get varying experience if willing to do site assignments.

    Cons

Management changes are taking the company in different direction, the results will not be known for years. Limited experience of new CEO. Solid upper management retiring.. Layoffs have been ongoing.

    Advice to Management

Engage all your employees, not just the young generation.
