I have been working at Bechtel full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Work is fast paced and there are usually international opportunities. Benefits are good and some management is superb. Ability to travel and funding for code committees, education, etc. Decent salary.

    Cons

Upward mobility is severely limited. Difficult to tell how hiring, raises, rankings, promotions, or bonuses are determined. A lot of bad promotions are made. Need to heavily self promote or you don't get heard. Hard to get international assignments. Difficult to switch between functions and GBUs. Often very bureaucratic. Connections are valued over merit. Attempts for diversity and inclusion cross the line by discounting merit. Women are treated very poorly on site. Management figures abuse their position and hurt people's growth in the company. Little respect outside of home office locations, even for credentialed employees, if the position in the totem pole isn't high enough. Productivity is valued over quality and safety, contrary to company value. Unethical behavior not taken care of properly.

    Advice to Management

Break down doors. Place value in employees and treat them with respect. Reward for merit, not based on favoritism. Allow a culture of development for those who seek it. Remove senior leaders who don't foster the company values - even PVPs and SVPs. It matters. Treat craft workers with respect and dignity and it will show in their work. I would leave for lower pay based on my experiences but I know and have been in better parts of the company. Multi GBU, multifunction, multiple locations. Bechtel's VVCs are there, but they get mangled, twisted, and forgotten as they flow down.

    Pros

Learn a lot on mega billion dollar projects, proper training, experienced professionals to learn from, and you get to work across several functions rather than remaining in one position

    Cons

Management is old and many decisions made turn into political stand points for the sake of cost cutting. Excessive work hours that makes it hard to balance between work and social life.

I worked at Bechtel full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A variety of experience and projects are possible when there is a healthy backlog of work.

    Cons

Awful employee performance rating system which pushes employees toward spending vacation hours to support company-targeted volunteer organizations.
Little job security. When project work runs out, they lay off just like other engineering firms.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the employees who are closest to the work. Otherwise, management makes decisions without employee input.

I worked at Bechtel full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good pay, great employee programs for health and money management, safety etc.

    Cons

They move people around a lot, and the executive level employees are never available for the "lower" employees. Corporate side is great, best years of my career were at Bechtel corporate. When I move to the NS&E unit, I was miserable every single day. My coworkers were amazing, but my supervisor and the HR manager were always too busy and were quick to point fingers. Before my supervisor resigned, she ridiculed me, bullied me, and put me down in every meeting. I had fear of retaliation so I didn't take action. I truly wish I stayed on the Corporate side - my managers were outstanding.

    Advice to Management

Make TIME for your employees. Listen to them and stop trying to spread them all so thin that they are miserable almost every day.

I worked at Bechtel as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Good people to work with. I got along with everyone. Was able to keep busy. Good working environment.

    Cons

If management sees a way to send work overseas they will. Even if it takes longer and they use more people in India. They will pull the final 15-20% of the job and send it to India. Even if the plant they're building is in the U.S. They are willing to let go a bunch of US talent to save money. You get what you pay for though.

    Advice to Management

Please keep work here in the US. You don't have to send everything to India leaving nothing for US workers. We end up having to clean up the mess in the field. It gives the company a reputation that does not look good to the American people.
