I have been working at Bechtel full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Busy, generally a good work ethic all around. Lots of knowledgeable people to learn from.

    Cons

Pretty much zero security, layoffs every couple months. Also there's tons of engineers which makes it hard to stand out.

    Advice to Management

Knowing that you could be laid off at any moment doesn't encourage you to stay.

    I worked at Bechtel full-time

    Pros

-Descent place to start a career
-There are some mega projects + good on-site opportunities if you really like that
-Benefits are great (4 wks starting PTO)

    Cons

    -SEVERE lack of proper leadership
-There is a lot of blame game going around and leaders lack ownership
-Lack of growth or training for new employees
-Hourly time-cards although employees are supposed to be salaried

    Advice to Management

-Really take the time to observe the leadership at the ground level, and you'll see the evident blame game.
    -Hire better

    I worked at Bechtel full-time

    Pros

Bechtel has a well respected reputation in the engineering/construction industry. It is great to have Bechtel experience on your resume.

    Cons

Because Bechtel is a construction company, the work involves going to where the projects are located. You have to understand that you will be moving every years or two.

I have been working at Bechtel full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

There are a lot of ways to advance within Bechtel if you are willing to put in the time and work. In the home offices you have flex time and 9/80 schedule. In the field it is 4/10s & an 8 (overtime opportunities). Great benefits, matched 401K, 4 weeks PTO, and education reimbursement. Offices all around the globe and many opportunities to travel and work overseas.

    Cons

They expect you to come early and stay late without pay to show your dedication to the company. Bechtel is a project based company and they frown upon employees that want to stay in the home office and not relocate to the jobsites to get more experience. Do not work at Bechtel if you are not open to moving every 3-5 years for new projects.

    Advice to Management

Be more transparent with your employees in order to keep from looking secretive.

I worked at Bechtel full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There are a lot of great people who work for the company (also a lot of leaches), pay was pretty good and as long as you have managers who look out for you, raises we're good too. I learned a lot and it was a great first job before starting a family.

    Cons

    Sink or swim mentality.

There's a divide between employees in the field and at the main office. The main office folks had the work life balance where as employees in the field, this concept was non existent. In the construction group HR was hard to get a hold of, mainly because they were understaffed. At the end of one job they scrambled to figure out where to send you for you next job. There was little advanced notice and dealing with the moving department is a huge pain.

My husband and I both worked for Bechtel. We met on the job. When that project was over they were trying to get us on the same job but couldn't. I was pregnant at the time and didn't want to take a job away from my husband so I was laid off and then let go. Bechtel is a business and you have to go where the jobs are.
