I have been working at Beckett Media full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great group of people to work with -- experts in collectibles and true hobbyists. Dallas office has perks like an onsite gym, pool table, ping pong, and foosball. The company has been growing with a lot of acquisitions in the past 3 years. The company has locations in 4 countries so it's been pretty cool working with people all over the world.

    Cons

Everyone is on an incentive plan which they call pay for performance. So if your department does well, like Grading, then you get a nice quarterly bonus. If you don't hit your numbers, you don't get as much.

Since the company has locations in other countries, it can be hard scheduling calls and meetings.

    Advice to Management

    Continue growing and paying incentives.

I worked at Beckett Media (More than a year)

    Pros

Excellent professional contemporaries, generally good subject matter, direct/indirect exposure to interesting products and technologies

    Cons

Insanely tight deadlines eclipsed only by increasingly low compensation rates that are subject to change without notice -- during the course of any given project.
Accuracy and other nonsense avoided to save a dime -- just make sure the books are full of big pictures and little words between covers 1 and 4.

    Advice to Management

Get a clue ... or not. You've already outsourced insignificant administrative functions like payroll and such to non-English speaking countries, so the odds of The Chosen Ones of realizing they're throwing away a gold mine are slim to none.

I worked at Beckett Media full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good people on the basic level.

    Cons

Hubris in the textbook definition of the word. A near total lack of respect for anyone with a lower position than themselves. Ideas solicited from the masses will be taken and claimed by the upper management--even though their managers were in the room when the ideas were given. No one has your back here. Management appears to have little or no training in motivating and handling employees.

The parent company is in Raleigh, NC, the advertising sales and some magazines are Beckett-Media in Dallas, and another division was spun off from Beckett-- Engaged
Enthusiast Media out of Anaheim. Also Brian Gulledge is no longer CEO.

    Advice to Management

Respect your employees, take some management classes, care about your readers and what they want.

    Pros

Can be fun at times if you're into the subject matter, i.e., collectibles. Good people at the lower end of the spectrum.

    Cons

Upper management is disconnected, often physically (in a different office) from the people they supposedly manage. Input falls on deaf ears because they know how to make/sell magazines and the rest of us apparently don't.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your subordinates from time to time. You don't have all the answers.

    Pros

You do get enough vacation time, but its not worth it because there aren't enough people to help cover you and you'll end up with three times the workload when you get back, making for a stressful vacation.

    Cons

the most passive-aggressive management I've ever experienced. You will never, ever get praised, but will always be told what you're doing wrong. In fact, they will make weird things up about what you're doing wrong and then keep it on your record, even when it's agreed it's incorrect. You will be promised a bonus in order to work harder, but it will never come. If you're a robot with no soul and no heart, work here, you'll love it. If you never want to see your significant other or friends again, work here, you'll love it.

    Advice to Management

Be more upfront when there's an issue insteas of telling everyone but the person you have an issue with. Offer a way to boost morale, even if its a "thank you." Tell the employees when you let someone go and have a backup plan besides simply letting employees walk over to an empty desk and end u having to take over their job.

    Pros

Work life balance. Down to earth people. Fun work environment sometime. Feel like part of the company. It could be better though.

    Cons

No promotion opportunity. You just do your job and go home. Management not aggresive on sales and marketing. Only cost cutting can not save the company for sure.

    Advice to Management

Please take the leadership and have better strategy on marketing and sales. Cutting cost and laying off people are not the solutions to company.

    Pros

At times, it was a fun work environment. Great work/life balance. Flexibility on taking time off. Being able to work from home occasionally.

    Cons

At the time I left, one person was doing the job of 5 people. The current management believes in overworking the remaining staff. Also, staff is overworked, underpaid and stressed out because of the extra work and their "skeleton crew".

    Advice to Management

Management should be more upfront about any staff changes and company related matters that affect the staff. Meaning, if someone leaves please inform the others if they have to take over that person's job or if you're going to hire someone. Replace upper management with more experienced managers.
