I have been working at Bed Bath & Beyond part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Management is supportive and does not micromanage.
Employees are acknowledged and/or rewarded for their efforts.
Scheduling is surprisingly flexible, which allows management to accommodate employees' scheduling conflicts whenever it is, at all, possible.
Open conversation, friendliness, and satisfaction with/for customers, as well as customer service in general, is emphasized over the "hard sell", which promotes a less intense or stressful atmosphere for employees.
Management is more than willing to express their own, and LISTEN to others', thoughts/feelings about store operations, individual performance, and the non-specific stress that comes with a long day of work in retail settings.
Competitive pay that exceeded minimum wage more than would be expected.*
Good employee discounts at Bed Bath & Beyond and its subsidiaries, as well as "Associate Appreciation" weeks where even greater discounts were given.

    * I grew up in Maryland but now live in Louisiana (unfortunate, I know), where minimum wage is at the bare minimum; a pathetic $7.25/hour ($4.25 for the first 90 days if you are under the age of 20). Although many employers take advantage of this, Bed Bath & Beyond compensates its lowest-paid employees with $9.00/hour; almost 25% above the required minimum wage.

    Cons

Occasionally long hours that exceed the 8 hours originally scheduled.
Requires many consecutive hours on your feet (walking aisles, at register, completing "projects", working on stock, etc.).
Other part-time employees you work alongside are, often, less than competent, which requires others to pick up their slack.
Frequent use of fairly tall (often around 12 feet high) ladders, which is required and may exclude persons with significant acrophobia.

    Advice to Management

To be completely honest, I cannot recommend any advice. The only real negatives about this position (meaning those I listed, as I have excluded the general "cons" of working as an entry-level "sales associate" that one would find at any company) cannot be corrected by changes in management behavior or policy. Overall, I believe that Bed Bath & Beyond has succeeded in selecting, training, and nurturing members of management that encourage a positive working environment for all store employees.
