I worked at Bed Bath & Beyond part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Was great when I first started. I got along well with employees and my front end manager was great. Then in 2016 everything at the store changed. Some things happened personally with employees and the old store manager left. In comes a new one and all newer assistant managers. I did not like any of them with maybe the exception of one. In the end they did not listen to my very specific requests.

Pros were nice coworkers. Some friends for life. This job teaches you how to deal with all different types of people.

    Cons

barely any raises. They watch you like a hawk and track every transaction you make and only point out and punish for minor mistakes. Nothing was ever positive. No room for advancement. Not many hours given. In the end did not listen to me at all.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees and empathize with them.

I have been working at Bed Bath & Beyond full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great culture in caring for their associates. A national company that feels like a small market business. A GM position here is like an owner operator position. I have full ability to order any items I want to feature for my customers, and the ability to merchandise it however I want to in order to drive that particular item. We do not wear titles on our name badges, no one acts like they are more important than anyone else. Great company overall.

    Cons

Slow growth for upward mobility. They are starting to restructure the District and Regional level positions, so less positons are available to promote into. Very tenured high level positions.

    Advice to Management

Temporarily stop the acquisition of smaller companies, revamp the return policy, consider closing some of the smaller volume stores who's lease is coming up.

    Pros

Employee discount... 20% off. Half an hour break for shifts 6 or more hours. Not a demanding job. Will be moved to different departments often.

    Cons

Half of the workers are 16 year olds who have not been trained correctly, do not even know how to look up store inventory, locations of items, or work a register. You will NEVER attend a store huddle unless it is on a morning that a corporate member is in the store. I have seen customers return 6+ year old coffeemakers, clogged vacuums, soiled sheets, you name it. Even if the item was never sold by our company, managers return it as a similar item just to avoid receiving a complaint because corporate has no issue firing employees (like the hundreds of managers who were laid off the morning of- even if they were with the company 40+ years).

    Advice to Management

Train people correctly when they are hired. Re-train the staff who has not been trained properly- those on the floor who have barely ever walked through the warehouse and cannot locate items. Hold store huddles and meetings. Review employees more than once a year for 30 seconds. Return policy is too accommodating. You are denied if you even try to take off for national holidays, and still do not receive extra or holiday pay for any day of the year.

    Pros

They will teach hands on experience through the best customer service. Thorough training in all store departments.
    Advancements in house.

    Cons

Workplace politics are not for everyone.
Annual pay raises don’t feel like much.
Hard to become a full time employee.
Not for task driven members (customers come first, meaning everyone is a cashier)
No benefits for anything less than full time which is only manager positions.

    Advice to Management

Perhaps have more full time positions other than managerial.
