I worked at Bell and Howell full-time

    Pros

You can choose your path. They will help and encourage your professional growth. They have a long history as an American company. A place where retirement is available and honored,

    Cons

Can sometimes require long hours and weekends. Not too much of a problem as long as family is understanding.

I have been working at Bell and Howell (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Some great coworkers and customers

    Cons

I work in the field to service our customers with electro mechanical repairs, software and general service needs on a wide variety of equipment. This is the largest segment of employment within Bell and Howell. The geographic range we cover is large particularly because we are taking on additional vendors for which we service in addition to the equipment that used to be manufactured by us when we were in a manufacturing role. Due to the broadness of the area we cover we are often shorthanded during the day due to people being on the road or out of town.
Work life balance is hard to manage with having to be on call 24/7 and often leads to sleep deprivation and feeling poorly during the normal work day as a result. The company is resistant to hire the appropriate help as overhead costs are carefully monitored to appeal to the revenue needs of the capital investment company that owns us.
This is also complicated by the fact that we have had only two 2 percent raises in the last 10 or 11 years as well as no 401k contribution for nearly as long. These financial detriments are said to be maintained until at which point we can be sold so long term outlook is not good in this area. Long term positives are not in the offerings any time soon and we are told as much.
Our failure to follow market trends and modify our protocols have placed us in this undesirable position and outlook is weak and although there is some growth with service personnel it is in the way of lower paid and minimally experienced help which does not bode well for adequate growth potential going forward. Perhaps we may be fortunate to be absorbed by a better run organization that will have a clearer vision for our future than the current grab any service we can muster approach. We have become jack of all trades and masters of none which is unfortunate as our service specialties were highly regarded at one time.
Currently stress, lack of sleep, withholding prior financial benefits and loss of direction and minimal upper managerial communication is what you experience as an employee. I hope that these things change soon but there is no indication of such for a long time if ever..

    Advice to Management

Honor and reward the people who are making the sacrifices for this company. Empty promises about bringing back our financial benefits angers people after years of false hope.

I worked at Bell and Howell (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Hardworking Honest employees who are committed to customer satisfaction

    Cons

Employees are overworked and have been over promised raises, 401k matching and a better company for a long time. Current management/ownership only cares about the bottom line and not about the employees

    Advice to Management

Replace your Senior Management with people who will listen and actually implement recommended changes instead of doing what they have always done or only doing what benefits them the most. Focus on the company and not so much on yourselves.

I have been working at Bell and Howell full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Local management generally gives you leeway to do your job.
    Does not micromanage.
Coworkers are a good group of people

    Cons

Lousy pay. One raise in last seven years.
    Outlook for raises is bleak.
No 401k matching in last seven years.
They expect the technicians to jump through hoops for nothing.
Never appreciated or compensated fairly for what is expected.

    Advice to Management

Quit. You are only ever concerned with your bonuses.
Ra Ra talk but always lies & doubletalk.
Treat the technicians with some respect. They are the only reason the company makes any money. All the other management are worthless.

    Pros

None...there really no pros working for this company

    Cons

Extremely unethical company! They hired me and used me to prospect and I gave them over 500 prospects with company name, address, contacts and their direct phone numbers. After 4 weeks of entering all this data into their system they let me go.

    Pros

The work is exciting and frequently different. We have a good team that works hard to help the company be successful.

    Advice to Management

Remember the mission of the company and also remember the people who help you to achieve the mission and goals.
