    Pros

Great, medium-size organization. Top-notch immunology research, including many auto-immune diseases.

    Cons

Only gripe is that Benaroya employees (who are affiliates of Virginia Mason Hospital) don't get a 15% discount at the Virginia Mason cafeteria.

    Pros

Very good departmental leadership. Upward mobility for high performers. Good Bonuses/benefits.

Pay is below average because of nonprofit status.

    Advice to Management

Develop better systems to terminate employees that don't perform.

I worked at Benaroya Research Institute At Virginia Mason full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Doing great work to fight disease, well defined focus area, although looking to expand. Excited to see a women at the helm. Good benefits, particularly for a non-profit. Development is available through Virginia Mason, but you need to seek it out. Little stress, never had to work over 40 hours.

    Cons

Training was limited. Very little growth opportunity and promotion was based on time in position and had little change in responsibilities. Work was challenging in the wrong ways, result of lack of guidance and solid processes.

    Advice to Management

Create a link between the day to day work being done and the impact on the institute.

I have been working at Benaroya Research Institute At Virginia Mason (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very low key co workers.... supportive and open minded to supporting the team atmosphere. Flexible hours to employees needs. Great benefits. The MDs at VM are generally a dream to work with. Constant improvements with processes are welcomed easily.

    Cons

Very weak connection between departmental research ongoing. BRI is treated like the lil sidekick to VM and so you often feel like you are second rate to the staff who you are working to support. Very few development opportunities.

    Approves of CEO

I have been working at Benaroya Research Institute At Virginia Mason full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good support for Core facilities, Flow Cytometry, Histology, Tetramer Cores. Driven upper management, focused on final goal of therapeutics development with healthy respect for basic sciences. Good relationships with academic institutions.

    Cons

A step up from academia, but still not as comprehensive as a larger biotech company. Can sometimes be too small, but not often.

    Advice to Management

Could be more involved in the day to day scientific operations. Although, I appreciate the respect given to allow researchers to work independently.

I worked at Benaroya Research Institute At Virginia Mason full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Experience if you are fresh out of college. Free water from water fountain, also paper cups. That is about it. Yeah.

    Cons

No consequences for not doing your job. Anyone with any skill leaves within a year. A series of bad hires will sink the research division. It is in shambles. Contracts getting pilled big docs leaving.

    Advice to Management

Fire the bad people. You know who they are

    Pros

    Wonderful people and well organized.

    Cons

BRI is getting bigger so it's losing some of it's family-like atmosphere but it's still a great place.

    Advice to Management

Don't let the atmosphere get overly industrial... Keep it like a close family.
