I have been working at Bergen Community College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I really enjoy working with this population. The kids are a real mixed bag: some are there because community college is cheaper; for some, this school is their only option and others have no idea why they are there.

    Cons

The rate of success and failure for the kids is highly variable because the students come from many different walks of life

    Advice to Management

Invest in your staff, and results will trickle down to the students. Cut the number of adjunct positions and increase the number of professor positions. There are 10's of adjunct professors to teach Success (freshman seminar) instead of hiring full-time faculty who would be able to teach more sections. If you did this, teachers and students would both win because teachers would be more immersed in the material and there would be less variability in the classes taught.

I have been working at Bergen Community College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Amazing opportunities to make a difference in the life of a student to show them that the world is not so black and white. I find the strengths in my students and exploit them while minimizing their weaknesses. The theories I teach them are good for not only the subject matter but also for life. My goal is for the students to come into my classes as business beginners and come out as business professionals.

    Cons

Advancement is an issue in this college.

I have been working at Bergen Community College part-time

    Pros

Definitely teaches you behind the scenes of how a college works. Great co-employees. Good environment. Fun job. Overall a good job to have and very convenient while taking classes. The people really try to work around your schedule.

    Cons

The higher ups definitely can make the student aids feel small and only there to take care of their needs.
