I have been working at Berger/Abam Engineers full-time

I worked at Berger/Abam Engineers full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Small company feel, interesting clients and projects - lots of military and international port work. Very strong in their core business which is waterfront structural engineering. Most of the staff and management get along really well and are great to work with. Junior staff can advance very quickly if self motivated and their skills align with the core business (i.e - structural waterfront engineering).

    Cons

Not strong in pretty much everything other than their core business with the exception of the planning/environmental office in Vancouver, WA. Offices no longer actively compete but it still feels like lots of little companies all guarding their own turf. Very limited opportunities for advancement after reaching mid to senior level. No real incentive to go the extra mile. Under performing employees and managers are given equal consideration to those that really try.

    Advice to Management

Develop a strategic plan. Support all areas of the business or drop the pretense and just focus on what you do well.

  3. "Good people, technically sound company. They specialize in military and port work, but do some transportation too."

I have been working at Berger/Abam Engineers full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Easy location to get to in Federal Way. You don't have to take a bus or pay $300 a month to park. They do have a Seattle office though. I can't speak for that place. They do have a good comp time/overtime pay system.

    Cons

Benefits are the worst I've seen in the industry. They are part of a sister company, Louis Berger, which we work with sometimes and compete against other times. I hear Louis Berger has a completely different culture. But I don't know much about it. A few people here have worked at both places.

    Advice to Management

I think management is doing what they can. Benefits could be a lot better. They don't do a lot of big projects, but that takes time.

    Pros

Excellent technical staff with first-hand knowledge, qualifications and skill. Perhaps, the best in the industry with respect to technical prowess.

    Cons

    None that we can notice.

    Advice to Management

    N/A

I have been working at Berger/Abam Engineers full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good mid-size company that provides the opportunity to work on small to large scale interesting projects. Strong base of deep in-house technical skills and knowledge and a really good team of people who enjoy working together. Firm keeps up-to-date on technology. In the past few years, there has been a transition to new leadership in some sectors and this has been successful. Firm has done very well winning and delivering on projects for clients. BergerABAM cares about it's employees and provides support for career development and a fairly good benefits package.

    Cons

BergerABAM is a great place to work. No significant cons.

    Advice to Management

Keep focusing on the future and how the firm can grow.

I have been working at Berger/Abam Engineers full-time

    Pros

The company seems to care about you as an employee. My understanding is that they pay well for the positions offered.

    Cons

The technology is outdated and a bit behind. The management and client base are quite a bit older on average, and therefore have outdated ideas and management styles.

The management does a poor job training. They do not give advice and generally have the wrong person training new employees. For example, if there is an "in-house" expert on a topic, they have an employee far less sufficient or knowledgeable train the new employee. It's very inefficient and leads to general confusion.
