I worked at Berkeley full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Nice people to work with but too many cliques. Hard to fit in.

    Cons

My department had an impossible person to work
with or, as it was in her mind, work for. That person made it impossible to do anything, even work. She micromanaged every minute even though she was not my supervisor. She was mean and tried to use that to intimidate people. She was terrible and I couldn't wait to leave. Pay and benefits could not make up for her craziness. I dreaded going to work. I was sad she thought she was my overload. I was hired for one position but then the manager retired and the director became my supervisor, she decided she would be instead. A lot of mixed signals on what my duties actually where because she wanted one thing and the director told me something else. She treated people very badly....unlesss she wanted something from you, then she'd be nice for a minute.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the rank and file- they are important too. Don't give too much "power" to a heartless person who is only after power and making other people miserable. Promote from within. Build up your employees. Be good to them, they work hard but when someone wants a minute by minute of what someone did to day, minute by minute everyday for no reason, it becomes impossible to work or want to be there.

I have been working at Berkeley full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

This used to be the best place to work with innovative and creative engineering solutions to some of the city's problems/issues.

    Cons

Recent hires, in particular in the supervisory level have been very questionable. Not sure how it came to be, but it's gotten awful. If someone has bounced around to different places of employment on a regular basis, it's usually for a reason.

    Advice to Management

Advance to management? Obtain new management. Being rude and pretentious is not the way to manage.

    Pros

Most employees feel rather passionately towards their work. The employees are recognized and respected and are able to work on meaningful tasks.

    Cons

Can be too liberal to the point of irrationality. In addition, while many employees work very hard, others work very little. Mixed bag in terms of work ethics and performance.

    Advice to Management

Find ways to motivate all employees and properly compensate them for their efforts.
