    Negative Outlook

I worked at Berkeley USD full-time

    Pros

This small continuation school had access to a lot of resources such as a school nurse, mental health professionals, resource teacher, after school program, arts and other electives, a music studio, cooking classes, garden, laptops and computer lab.

    Cons

Administration at district level and at the school site. BUSD treated the hard working, mostly black professional educators --many of whom had masters degrees or higher--like it treated the students who attended the school: with condescension and disdain. We were marginalized and forgotten. Many principals that passed through seemed to use the school as a stepping stone to advance their careers rather than actually caring about the students (or hardworking staff). And the teachers were not respected as the front line soldiers we were, developing innovative strategies to teach hard- to- reach & traumatized children.

    Advice to Management

The district needs an overhaul in general as there was an obvious effort to get rid of black teachers and students district-wide.

    Pros

Pros: This is a fairly small district. The pay is fairly low especially when you look at the neighboring districts. There is a strong emphasis on inclusion. White males need not apply.

    Cons

Cons: Union is completely ineffectual. The human resources and personnel department are in shambles. The middle school has a lunatic principal.

    Advice to Management

Advice to Management- don't hire principals who have never been teachers and who do not like kids. The principal at Washington cries all the time.
