    Pros

Pros: This is a fairly small district. The pay is fairly low especially when you look at the neighboring districts. There is a strong emphasis on inclusion. White males need not apply.

    Cons

Cons: Union is completely ineffectual. The human resources and personnel department are in shambles. The middle school has a lunatic principal.

    Advice to Management

Advice to Management- don't hire principals who have never been teachers and who do not like kids. The principal at Washington cries all the time.

I worked at Berkeley USD full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I enjoyed helping the kids learn. It was a job that I felt like I was really making a difference in a child's life.

    Cons

The administration treated the instructional assistants and if we weren't as important because we weren't credentialed like the teachers.

    Advice to Management

Please treat all staff with the same respect whether they are credentialed or not!

  9. "On the average a relatively organized and supportive district office, a strong union and very supportive community."

    Pros

Extraordinary support from the community, diverse and colorful student body full of creative ideas and passion, a lot of great people working hard in roles from administration to maintenance.

    Cons

Depending on your role, attitude and personality people seem to love working in BUSD or can't handle it. It can be overwhelming, especially at the high school. Over the years you'll ride ups and downs of administrator strength and level of organization and support.

    Advice to Management

Improve hiring processes and retention efforts to ensure strong candidates are offered jobs and stay. Turnover and loss of staff talent is a big blow to the grand ideals of the district. Be open to more radical changes and dare to be a leader in the state of pushing those changes. The 21st century is here and how we teach, what's important for student learning is not found in STAR tests and other silly assessments.

I worked at Berkeley USD part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great work environment. Will be exposed to diverse set of students.

    Cons

Saturated job market because of proximity to UC Berkeley.

    Advice to Management

More selective of teachers to get best qualified candidates.

I worked at Berkeley USD full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great salaries for teachers in the bay area, lots of enrichment offerings for the students.

    Cons

Competitive atmosphere depending on school site (I've heard some schools are very different and super collaborative). Pressure from parents is high but overall they were very supportive.

    Advice to Management

Everyone should work together to create a solid program. If people are allowed to try to one up each other constantly the feeling of insecurity is overwhelming.
