I have been working at Berkley Technology Services full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Everyone I work with is great and are approachable especially upper management. The work environment is casual and though you can busy it's not the stressful busy.

    Cons

The health benefits have a higher deductible - though other businesses seems to be going that way.

    Advice to Management

I appreciate the open door policy and the communication between management and staff.

    Pros

Good benefits. Good pay. Some good managers. If you're a white male you're set.

    Cons

Unless you're a hot girl you're largely discounted if you're female. Definite boy's club.

    Advice to Management

Treat your female developer's with respect, even the average looking ones. Although I know you won't because you're a big boy's club.

    Pros

Work life balance is good. Location is good.

    Cons

Technologies are old, managers who were good in technology and understood how software should be developed left the company. They were replaced with people who lack knowledge of software development.

    Advice to Management

Hire competent qualified technical people. Software is 20 percent development 80 percent maintenance. Hire managers who are also engineers and have developed code not someone who is good in in excel or can talk few words in agile.

    Pros

Work life balance was generally fine - few late nights or weekends required.

    Cons

If you work in a remote office, you don't feel like part of the company. If you do not have a degree in computer science but have other certifications and experience, you will not receive adequate compensation. Bonuses are at the whim of management and not predictable or based on KPIs. Very poor communication or alignment of projects between internal product teams.

    Advice to Management

Make sure internal teams are collaborating, be up front with pay/bonuses, modernize and allow people without degrees in computer science to hold positions beyond a BA.

    Pros

You get paid the same if you work hard or hardly work. A warm body with no ability for free thought is highly encouraged and often given accolades. If you like a challenge that leaves you feeling exhausted and completely spent at the end of the day, then BTS is the place for you.

    Cons

Management wants employees that cannot think for themselves. Management does not support their team and often puts up roadblocks instead of clearing them away. Collaboration among different teams is quite unheard of. Everyone seems to stick to their responsibilities and do not welcome collaborative efforts between different teams. Information between teams is not exchanged but rather seems to be very difficult... when a collaborative approach is needed to solve technology issues. The lack of leadership skills of some of the mid to senior level management is quite evident once you begin to express ideas that differ from theirs.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to value their employees. Treat them as the assets that they are. Promote their strengths and help them overcome hurdles rather than tossing more in their path. When an employee comes to you with a better solution, do not discount them because it might cause you to confront other team leads and develop a working collaborative approach. When trying to determine where change is needed, look within... first because management is where the change needs to happen. Management that listens, understands, values, recognizes and promotes their employees is what is lacking at BTS.

I have been working at Berkley Technology Services full-time for less than a year

    Pros

All management I have interacted with have technical backgrounds. There's no need to try to dumb down explanations. Every team member, even those who work remotely, are more than happy to help and provide documentation. The environment is stable. Management asks for ideas from their employees and they follow through. Automation is being improved, but it's already beyond any other place I've worked. The location and... facility is great. A little gym is included, and several perks -- too many to write. This is a truly fantastic place to work.

    Cons

You have to be a self-starter. I don't see anyone coasting by. Either people are let go for their laziness or BTS only hires the best. There is an on call schedule, but it's infrequent at worst -- every 15 weeks or so. Some work is expected outside of your normal work day.

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing everything you do.

I have been working at Berkley Technology Services full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Poor performance doesn't automatically get you laid off for a very long time. Unless you really screw up and upset one of the 50+ "customer" companies. Rules are not enforced very well. If you're a "yes" person, you might be promoted.

    Cons

High performers are rarely recognized and all the best people leave after about 5 years. You'll be ignored if you dissent with your manager, and it's nearly impossible to change to a different team when you want. The process seems to be easy, however there is a lot of behind the scenes back talk preventing movement within the company. Like most companies, raises are meager at best. Pay is poor, but because you can... be lazy without repercussions, maybe that's okay?

    Advice to Management

Demonstrate that you value employees contributions, even when it's dissenting and the customer companies won't like it.

I worked at Berkley Technology Services full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Flexibility, but you can find this at most places since this is becoming a standard requirement for most employees. BTS uses this as a selling point, but it really isn’t much different than other employers.

    Cons

Managers are concerned with impressing executive leadership to the point that developing current employees and putting them in the best possible situation, is an after thought.

    Advice to Management

Be proactive at creating the best possible work environment for your employees that yearn to thrive. Give them challenges and listen to concerns of what isn’t working.
