I have been working at Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

If you are willing to work hard, there are many opportunities open for you. Great company that wants to do the right thing. Also mostly promotes from within.

    Cons

There is, at times, some inconsistency in management. Communication between departments could also be improved.

    Advice to Management

Communicate more with the front line employees.

    Cons

Management No upward movement Constant reports REPORTS REPORTS

    Advice to Management

You have revamped the mission statement and are constantly chanting “DO THE RIGHT THING” (which, by the way is annoyingly written on the walls, however, these days that’s not the case. Solely focused on analytics and reports as an adjuster I constantly find myself trying to “stay off reports” and meeting the goal (you know, because we close Claims faster than industry > insert eye roll here < ) instead of... providing “compassionate care”. Claims Upper Management seems to have a lot of people running the show who have never managed a caseload and don’t understand the actual day to day tasks that an adjuster has. And oddly enough, the Directors who actually have the experience are constantly deferring to someone who has zero working experience in Claims. Stop with the endless reports and needless evaluation tool (which is the biggest time waster that I have) and get back to the basics of solid claims handling. That’s really how you provide compassionate care and doing the right thing by injured workers.

I have been working at Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Only good thing is salary, offer was 10k less than advertised

    Cons

Misleading from start. No pre-defined job-description or responsibilities written. Performance-review criteria not given ahead of time and made up after reviews are due. Lack of ethnic diversity with all-male white managers. Ethnic minorities, especially female, are fired or quit more than any other group.

    Pros

    Good parking! Decent benefits.

    Cons

Low pay, unmanageable workloads, poor management. Gossipy, lying, backstabbing supervisor and manager. If you aren't part of "the click" then just forget it. So unprofessional! Just move on...

    Advice to Management

    Clean house!

I worked at Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Compensation - the organization's primary retention mechanism is to pay its personnel well.

    Cons

This is a highly micro-managed culture that will not encourage your personal latitude and creativity (i.e. you will have low job satisfaction). The Corporate Values are there for show, there is no commitment demonstrated to any of them.

    Advice to Management

Ensure there is consistency between what you say vs. what you do. Set your employees up for success, then get out of their way and allow them to perform.
