I worked at Berlitz full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The best part about the job was having clients from all over the world and from many different industries. Very rewarding to see students improve their language skills. There are still a good amount of veteran instructors who still make the company great by taking great pride in their work (despite their low salaries).

    Cons

The Berlitz method is what made this company great but sadly it's no longer used by most of its instructors. Training in the method has not happened since the 1990s. The books are not updated regularly and are not worth what they charge. This is evident in the new English, Spanish, Italian, French, German binder format books.

Teachers are not paid to prepare for classes and as a result many show up unprepared. There is no quality control. Lack of transparency in pricing. What are students paying for if programs are not customized, teachers are not prepared, books are not good, and there is serious under staffing which causes problems in class scheduling? Almost all language schools are understaffed and the staff that is there is overwhelmed and underpaid.

    Advice to Management

If Berlitz were to re-focus on the method and on providing better quality products, they could keep their high prices. If the quality is not there, then students will not be willing to pay for the "premium brand" service they are offered.

Instructors should be paid a living wage and outstanding instructors should help mold and develop better books for the company.

I have been working at Berlitz part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There is a relative freedom in the teaching methods and style. Administrative staff is very communicative. The hours are set by the instructor initially, and if there is a match, then you get the student and the hours you want to work.

    Cons

Extremely low pay- minimum wage. It takes the fun out of the job really. I would recommend this job for someone who's looking to get experience, not pay rent.

    Advice to Management

    Increase instructors' pay.

I have been working at Berlitz part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

It is very specialized and challenging. Good job for a college student or retired or semiretired individual, based as a part time job.

    Cons

Take home pay hardly takes you home. Working conditions are onerous for Instructors most of the time. Impossible to get a new car or pay the mortgage.

    Advice to Management

Be more professional. Sales are important but be less eager about them and act more elegant.

I have been working at Berlitz full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I received good training in sales. Colleagues are diverse culturally.

    Cons

Frequent leadership changes lead to poor choices of direction and strategy. Great results are hardly ever recognized privately or publicly.

    Advice to Management

Protect the "brain drain" of the company. Focus on the markets you can lead instead of the ones that seem sexy for the moment. Quit spending money on purchases of other companies that pay poor dividends.

I have been working at Berlitz full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Meet interesting people from all over the world. Learn many skills if you don't have prior work experience.

    Cons

Money-hungry, shameful and arrogant upper management. Far from a motivational and inspiring environment to work in. If you are afraid to speak up for yourself, than be prepared to work far beyond your job description and be constantly taken advantage of, without proper compensation. This year the new initiative is to push the "Premium brand," but what is premium about it? Everyone is still underpaid, material is outdated, and management creates a threatening environment focused on numbers rather than customer satisfaction. How can we increase sales when we raise our prices and constantly turn over instructors?

Teachers are the foundation of the company, yet they are used and abused rather than valued and appreciated. They are expected to do extra trainings and preparation for customized programs on their own time, without getting paid for it.

    Advice to Management

Try investing in your PEOPLE to make North America profitable. Get off your high horse and listen to the people that actually work in the field. A positive attitude goes a long way...people are inspired when there are incentives to work towards and encouragement. The abusive environment will only push more people away, and further lower morale. They are now taking away commission for salespeople.....REALLY?? Everyone ought to quit and see how PHQ floats this business solo.
