I worked at Best Buy part-time

    Pros

I think upfront, there are many reasons to work at a place like Best Buy, such as the discounts, and being able to get your hands on the latest gadgets early.

    Cons

No real structure, managers seem inexperienced. Hours can be brutal. High Turnover

    Advice to Management

Impose more structure in your teams. Your supervisors have little impact or control over their subordinates. Its very hard to take them seriously, let alone respect them. The only reason they have any control at all is because people want to get a paycheck, not because they RESPECT their leader.

Build from the top down and you will see a increase in employee satisfaction and retention. Just because you're a manager doesn't at all imply you know everything there is to know, especially about managing people. LISTEN to the people who are boots on the ground actually doing the job. High turnover is a BAD thing at any job. Focus on how to improve these conditions and start investing in people more committed to excellence and not just looking for a paycheck.
This isn't a horrible place to work, but improvement is a necessity.

I worked at Best Buy part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Best Buy is a great place for someone who loves technology like I do. It's a nice place to go to work. I always enjoyed it.

    Cons

The pay wasn't great even for an 18 year old fresh out of high school. I had to carry extra weight from other employees who didn't care about their job as much as I cared about mine, and nothing was ever done to resolve the situation.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees more. Some of them really do know what they are doing and can provide valuable insight on how to improve the working environment and improve sales.

I have been working at Best Buy part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Discount is great, you can actually run into managers and supervisors that actually care about you. If you are well liked and succeeding well in sales numbers, your chances of moving up in the company increase significantly.

    Cons

Be cautious of who the managers are. They can make or break your time at best buy. A lot of stores play the favorites game. It's all a numbers game for the management.

I have been working at Best Buy part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Discounts on Mobile phones and Best Buy products. Growth within the company. Being around all the latest and greatest technology.

    Cons

Not enough hours. No benefits for part-time, well at least the good ones anyways. Dealing with customer issues and returns.

    Advice to Management

    Don't hire a million people.

    Pros

    Good employee discount,
fair concern given to medical concerns / emergencies
    provided break room nice
    work load adequate for pay

    Cons

-Some corporate policies make employees feel unappreciated. Never saw any change (minor or major) despite 4+ years of filling out in-house employee surveys on store/company problems. (survey seemed like little more than lip service)
-Company used to promote from within. After a recent (2014-15) middle management slash, policy seems to have changed (at least in North Texas.) I saw several people with 5+ years of management experience in-company (who could have started the job immediately and given the store a smooth transition) get passed over for someone from Walmart who had to be completely trained by the people whose job she took causing a 4+ month hassle /learning / mistake period for employees/ customers

    Advice to Management

Have worked at a few retails stores in the company, both big boxes. Would advise killing the policy of parallel transfers at the same pay rate. Most stores will allow employees to move departments, all the ones I worked at required the employees to keep their same pay rate despite having to learn a new set of skills and then still having to work as back up for the department they left.

    No room for advancement

    Keep favoritism down

I have been working at Best Buy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits and discount. IF you can get off the sales floor you can make a decent income in a supervisor role.

    Cons

Like I said, not a career, but a great job.

    Pros

    Good management
    Flexible with schedule

    Cons

Don't mess up, or abuse your employee discount

  10. "Great until promised transfer"

    • Career Opportunities

Former Employee - Computer Sales Associate in Amarillo, TX

I worked at Best Buy part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Helping customers with technology, low physical work required, decent pay

    Cons

Management below the GM level is HORRIBLE, pay raises are made nearly impossible unless you are the king of selling, they might promise a continued job and suddenly drop you without even speaking with you again.

    Advice to Management

Get a handle on the lower management. They need to be responsible for their laziness and lack of competence.
