I worked at Best Buy full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Numerous opportunities for career growth, you just have to be flexible and willing to relocate. Great company that strives to create a having fun while being the best mentality while paying very well for the consumer electronics field .

    Cons

The staff continues to become increasingly younger, immature and not very knowledgeable across the board…This is a bad combination.Have to hire more adults with real responsibilities like bills and kids not just the kids who live at home with a cell phone bill…

    Advice to Management

The vast majority of leadership is no longer grown from within. It is great to always look for the best talent however you have to make the commitment to grow, develop and promote from within, In turn you will see attrition become lower, have more repeat customers as they will come back for the knowledgeable staff ,and not just to ask for a price match online. The company must get back to its roots we had so much fun in the stack them high and watch them fly days, however we did consistently attach products, accessories and services,There will always be competition as the world of retail is forever changing however you need to invest in knowledgeable staff, stop always looking to trim deficits by cutting labor first, labor is your life line IF it is maximized correctly with management getting maximum output from the staff. The original values have to come back it just can't be a saying just remember the days when Dick Schulze, Brad Anderson and even Brian Dunn ( Try to forget the reason for his departure he did great things in almost 30 years with the company) were running the company morale was up, the team was pumped and every time I lead a team meeting with TAG TV I could not wait for the yearly statement "this year will be the most important holiday season ever".Most of the leaders hired into the company don't even know or care about the tornado sale, Sound of Music etc So when there are people like me who stayed with the company for a decade started off O/S DI ,learned every dept and worked my way up the ranks you then feel more ownership and pride in the company..Bring back the values and only hire people who see the vision and not the ones who just want a job.

I have been working at Best Buy (More than a year)

    Pros

Good culture. Managers care about the employees.

    Cons

Long hours and you're on your feet a long period of time.

    Advice to Management

More personal development for managers. Leadership skills for senior managers.

I worked at Best Buy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Fast paced, exciting environment where you get out of your work what you want to. Was promoted to Sales Manager from Magnolia associate and was a great experience at first. Enjoyed the ability to coach and train employees and learn the business side of how a big box retailer works.

    Cons

A lot of employees get burnt out quickly because they are making way too little and expected to reach very high sales goals with nothing in return for it. A lot of favoritism in the management, especially the GM's.

    Advice to Management

Promote the better employees, not the ones who you are buddy/buddy with and employees who are capped out at their hourly rate should be able to receive some sort of compensation based on their performance review. The fact that I had some employees not get a raise over a 3 year period is ridiculous.

I have been working at Best Buy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

employee discount-introduction to new lines of products

    Cons

workload vs life, it seems heavier towards holidays which is normal for retail.

    Pros

Great discount, even though its not as good as it was.

    Cons

Upper management doesn't work well. They make biased decisions and treat people differently.

    Advice to Management

Move people around more often so it doesn't become a "good old boys" group.

    Pros

If you are extremely driven, and dedicated it is a great place to advance your career. You can learn an amazing amount of business acumen, but this will need to be self-started. No one will drag you along... the self-motivated and self-sacrificing will rise to the top... If they have the sales, and interpersonal skills to do so.

    Cons

You will lose your holidays, and weekends. Plus once you are in.... it is difficult to leave, because the pay is generally higher than industry average.

    Pros

Best Buy is a fun environment, it has tons of upside in terms of the ability to grow within the company, training and opportunities based on talent, not tenure. Great benefits, Great communication even if sometimes to much, and it's a job where the company expects you to take care of the customer. Best Buy is hardly ever the problem with a customer complaint, it's usually an employee's understanding or stubborn attitude that is the problem. I have never gotten any flack for taking care of a customer even if it cost the company money.

    Cons

It's retail, the hours and the few chances I get to spend with my family.

    Advice to Management

Don't punish CSM's for choosing to do sales management, different stores and different managers and I always either work mids or closes and hardly have weekends off. Because I choose to do the thing that keeps the company afloat I am supposed to have less of a work life balance?

    Pros

The pay and benefits have been good. Bonuses are a good plus when received and are something to work towards.

    Cons

Management talks down to you at every level. Taking time off when sick or needed for personal reasons is all but nonexistent. Unfair treatment from managers. They seem to only care about their bottom line and dollar and do not care what happens to the employees and/or their personal life.

    Pros

Awesome employee discount, fun products to be around on a daily basis, fellow employees all very friendly and like family.

    Cons

A lot of responsibility riding on this one management position versus other positions. Moving up in the company requires politicking and not really based on performance.

    Advice to Management

Look at moving or promoting employees based off their performance, not just how well you can relate to your direct manager.
