I have been working at Best Buy full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There is a lot of autonomy. You're expected to take things and run with it, with very little training or direction at times. This can be fun and they do reward individuals who are good at this.

    Great benefits and comp.

    Cons

Engineering direction is constantly fluctuating and is horribly communicated.

Employees don't share the vision as it's not outlined well.

    Lots of negativity.

    Advice to Management

Leadership needs to give people more direction. Everyone should be able to answer questions about where we are going and be able to share your vision. Promote people that have vision for the products.

I have been working at Best Buy as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Outside of the core hours (9-3:30 or so), hours are flexible.
When you have something you enjoy working on, you have some freedom as to the design.
Most coworkers are friendly and helpful.

    Cons

All employees are expected by on-call on a regular basis, as well as Black Friday/Thanksgiving.
Pair programming is mandatory (this may be a "pro" for some people).
Employees are meant to be interchangeable, with no subject experts, or long-term work. Due to pair programming employees change focus, programming partners, and even seating arrangements and equipment on a semi-weekly basis.
In order to enforce this, cubicle walls are very low, which results in a very loud workplace.
If you do not speak Hindi, you will miss out on certain discussions. It sucks when your coworkers are joking around or discussing the weekend and you are not able to participate.

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to copy Amazon and innovate on your own basis.
Do not treat employees like cogs in a machine, as you will continue to lose a lot of good talent. Stop shifting priorities on a monthly basis.
Lastly, if a coding or development process works for one team, embrace it, rather than forcing them to adhere to an arbitrary standard. Yes, pair programming can help reduce bugs by 15%, but that's at the cost of 50% of your workforce. Code reviews can reduce bugs by 20%+ and do not require one developer to be the "observer."

I have been working at Best Buy full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

In my short time at Best Buy I've come to realize how great of a place it is to work. The people are great. The processes are streamlined. The CEO and executive board actually care about the business and its people. The benefits and great too.

    Cons

Like most companies, Best Buy treats security as an expense.

    Advice to Management

Stop giving money to direct competition (such as Amazon AWS).

  6. "Connected Home"

    Pros

Great team. Holiday Parties. Awesome break-room. They feed you a lot, well my store does. Discounts. You meet a lot of connections. You gain great knowledge of technology. Bonuses. First to meet and try new technologies. Accommodations which are ridiculous discounts on select products.

    Cons

Hard to get a full-time or part-time position. Managers expect you to make sales but no commission. You really need to know the products to sell and make your goals. Team members sometimes try to take sales. APs are always on the walkie telling you to watch people who are not stealing anything.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the awesome work. Won't be at bestbuy for too long, but i am enjoying the experience. But I would say that you guys can stop with the good manager bad manager attitude when an employee has a bad day of sales.

    Pros

Two Caribous in the corporate headquarters

    Cons

People will run you over for a Caribou. No promotions, layoffs frequent, empty qubes all over the buildings they still occupy.

    Advice to Management

    Get a clue.

I worked at Best Buy (Less than a year)

    Pros

Cool internship with cutting edge tech. Supportive staff, and an incredible project. Gave real work that would be used in production! Has the opportunity for post internship full time job offers.

    Cons

As an intern, there are no downsides to a job like this. Best Buy is still transitioning from a hired contractor to a full time tech employee company. It's a good time to get into their Ecommerce department.

    Advice to Management

Continue this internship program! It has received only positive reviews from everyone that took part in it.

I have been working at Best Buy as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Best buy does produce good managers. Great bennifits and killer employee discount. The job also helps you develop sales skills. Great job to get in high school and college

    Cons

There's a lot of corporate politics and procedures that you have to follow. They arnt very efficient. Also I don't fully agree with the pay for the amount of work you actually do

    Advice to Management

I never had a problem with management. They awalys took care of me. For you to be a successful manager you need to learn how to take care of the workers under you
