I have been working at Best Buy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great development if you work with your leaders on it.

    Inside and outside training available.

    Really care about their employees.

Some of the best benefits in the industry from healthcare to financial advisors to family planning.

Corporate is very hands on in developing the company in a great way based on customer service.

    Holiday pay is great.

Non commissioned in most sales positions but great bonuses if you hit goals.

    Cons

Every store runs quite a bit differently, management per store really controls how the store feels and operates.

PTO when first becoming full time is unbearable low.

    Advice to Management

Employees need a way to better understand how they are impacting he company and that what they are doing is actually helping the company progress. Employees seem to lose motivation due to not understanding the growth of the company.

I worked at Best Buy part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Team environment
    - Competitive in a fun way
    - Learning opportunities
    - Employee discount and vendor accommodations
    - A lot of training
    - It's a fun place to be and to work

    Cons

    - Most employees are part time
    - Difficult to earn full time status
    - A lot of meetings that happened without being scheduled in advanced. Often times these were early in the morning before the store opened, or late at night after it closed.
    - Hours cut drastically if not back to school time or a holiday. There were times I worked 1 shift per week. Can't live on that.
    - NUMBERS NUMBERS NUMBERS PERFORMANCE PERFORMANCE PERFORMANCE
    - The performance incentive is not well structured. You bonus based on how well the store reaches it's revenue goal, not on your own personal performance. They think this increases teamwork, but it really makes you despise those who under perform.

    Advice to Management

Give proper incentive to your employees. Don't make them rely upon other people's success. Each individual will be successful if they know they will get rewarded for it, with more than just a gold star and a congratulations at the morning meeting.

I have been working at Best Buy full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Best Buy is a forward thinking company with fantastic leadership!
They treat each one of their employees as they are a valued team member. They have taken care of each employee during all the disasters and hardships that have happened across the US and Puerto Rico.
This is a company that continues to give back to its stakeholders, employees, and the community.
It is an awesome feeling to be part of a company that continues strategically think about what the future holds.

    Cons

There are not many downsides to working here.

    Pros

This company continuously demonstrates how much it values employees and commitment to diversity and equal treatment for all.

    Cons

    I can't think of any

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing what you're doing

I have been working at Best Buy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent benefits if you are full time and salaries. Good resources on campus (banking, daycare, etc) for those that work on campus

    Cons

    - "Boys Club" mentality. Often promote friends vs Qualified Candidates
    - Gap between corporate employees understanding retail and big box (actually working inside a store)
    - Local Market Team is VERY disconnected from their employees and often don't take the time to understand each individual store and manager
    - Local Market Team (Minneapolis) is very inconsistent with accountability and goals = favoritism is an issue with the Market Team
    - Doesn't listen to employees and often sweep issues (including HR issues) "under the rug"
    - Store Employees are not valued in the Minneapolis Market
    - Company allows Directors, including Market Directors that manage an entire market of stores, to not even live in the market for a year!! Therefore, management doesn't even make it in to all the stores in their market for at least a year and we waste THOUSANDS on travel for them

    Advice to Management

Slow down and listen to employees to really understand their concerns and needs. Most of us want to improve and better ourselves, but we are so busy trying to fulfill the inconsistent goals that are set that we can't keep afloat. When we feel like we are tackling something, management changes the direction.

I have been working at Best Buy full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great company to work for. Great benefits with stock options and health care for full timers. Good employee discount. Company stock is also showing how well the turnaround has been the last few years.

    Cons

Pay scale is too low, individual merit is non-existent. Increase the pay scale and change how individual employees are rated and given raises.

    Advice to Management

Change how individuals are compensated for their work. The review rating based upon the whole store performance is weak and detracts / dissuades your best employees.
The company as a whole needs to revamp the hourly compensation levels, especially after the recent quarterly earnings were released. Company is doing well, so show that to your hardest workers; you will start losing your most caring troops if this doesn't change soon.

Friendly environment, great customer base, fun to work with technology.
Good pay, willing to pay competitively. Managers are willing to work with you if you are in school.

    Cons

Difficult to get days off, must be willing to compromise with flexibility. Hard to get full time, will schedule you for 38 hours to avoid benefits.
