I worked at Best Buy full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Overall the salaries are decent.

    Cons

The number of hours required to be able to complete the tasks for the Property/Facility Manager position reduced the per hour salary significantly.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to be sure that the tasks for a particular job are able to be accomplished in a reasonable amount of time.

I have been working at Best Buy (More than a year)

    Pros

Competitive base pay (for a minimum wage job)
    Great Company Values
    Highly diverse employees

    Cons

Customers get whatever they want if they complain enough
It’s either overstaffed or way understaffed when working. Never just right, usually the latter.

    Advice to Management

Have managers stick to the rule book instead of “key flicking” anything just to get the customer satisfied in the easiest way.

Promote team building time and rewards like a budget for going out once a quarter or something so coworkers are less like coworkers and more like friends and family. We used to do that, we don’t do it anymore.

    Pros

Operational Efficiencies and Practices and SG&A controls.

    Cons

Lacks a Capital Deployment Strategy on Innovation Development with a new compensation model.

    Advice to Management

Invest in the Future regarding Design and the Customer Experience across channels. Hire a Chief Design Officer. Be focused on the end use presentation. Show the customer how to use, make it playful and educational. Empower Employees.

I have been working at Best Buy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great development if you work with your leaders on it.

    Inside and outside training available.

    Really care about their employees.

Some of the best benefits in the industry from healthcare to financial advisors to family planning.

Corporate is very hands on in developing the company in a great way based on customer service.

    Holiday pay is great.

Non commissioned in most sales positions but great bonuses if you hit goals.

    Cons

Every store runs quite a bit differently, management per store really controls how the store feels and operates.

PTO when first becoming full time is unbearable low.

    Advice to Management

Employees need a way to better understand how they are impacting he company and that what they are doing is actually helping the company progress. Employees seem to lose motivation due to not understanding the growth of the company.

I worked at Best Buy as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

    1 - Great employee discounts
    2 - Descent humans abound
3 - Retail experience is fairly valuable
    4 - good parking
5 - interesting challenging work to tackle

    Cons

    1 - Stalled digital transformation
2 - Failed migration to product oriented work
3 - miserable performing laptops demonstrating incredible irony as they are internally geek squad supported

    Advice to Management

Your digital transformation and migration to product oriented agile work have both stalled. Your staffers spend most of their time on securing project based funding, administrative overhead and cross team conciliations. The digital team versus the enterprise IT culture is unhealthy and any successes of either group do not drive change or adoption within the other.

With the exit of the CDO and CIO these groups should have been recombined to complete the digital transformation and to truly adopt agile product oriented funding and execution. The move not to do so in the selection of leadership makes it very clear that there is no urgency to improve or change and that yesterday’s methods of managing the herd will do just fine.

    Pros

Opportunity to grow the company is great. The CEO vision is keeping the company on the path to growth. Fun product category to work in.

    Cons

Managers are horribly trained. Interview skills are atrocious. Many interview based on trying to prove you are wrong for the job versus being curious and open minded about what you can bring to a job. They cannot see beyond the skills that they have defined for a position.

    Advice to Management

Like many other roles, Manager should receive a bonus based on a rating of both their skills and talents for working with a team. And Favortism should be a heavily weighted score.

    Pros

Good work-life balance allows for time better spent elsewhere. Benefits are decent, with great vacation time. Fun and fast paced environment.

    Cons

The biggest con of the company is it often lacks connection to its purpose or to customers. Very business focused with out much mention of any bigger purpose.
