I worked at Best Buy full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

competitive pay, great discount, great benefits for full time, non-commission sales

    Cons

work to life is horrible, sometimes insane metrics to try and hit pending on size of store and time of year, sometimes doesn't feel like the company cares about associates.

    Advice to Management

Put more personal care into your people, there is no culture around "being human".

    Pros

Great pay compared to similar jobs, endless amounts of benefits, really fun place to make a career.

    Cons

A great culture starts with a positive leadership team to keep the employee force engaged. Unfortunately this is not consistent in every store.

    Advice to Management

    It starts with you!

I worked at Best Buy full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Fun and friendly work atmosphere. Great products, training, and customers. Plenty of opportunity to take leadership roles and to stand out from your peers. If driven, the path to supervisor, assistant manager, and even general manager is within the reach of most.

    Cons

During my time, the company went through a reorganization which caused my supervisor position to be eliminated. Luckily, I was able to laterally move to another supervisor role, but this experience was a firm lesson on the power of a public company's stock price and the decisions of its shareholders. This instability, inevitably, led to my departure.

    Advice to Management

Keep things fun and light. It is easy to get lost in the chase for numbers, but at the end of the day, a fun-loving employee will have more impact and effectiveness on your customers than someone just looking to land a sale. Try to remain the technology experts, and instead of selling, provide guidance and advice to all customers. They will undoubtedly appreciate it over the miriad of online (impersonal) product... reviews, and just might come to you for all of their future technology needs.

    Pros

Whether you're a supervisor, or an entry level sales associate, most well-performing stores will layout a great foundation for you to grow and learn. It does require patience though. Pay is decent, especially at leadership level. Employee discount is great. Typically, it's a small percentage above the wholesale cost. In other words, on accessories like phone chargers, or HDMI cables, you get them for nearly... 95% off. But on items like laptops because there is no margin, you get almost nothing if anything off.

    Cons

High expectations and lots of pressure to perform often under dire circumstances. Your best will often feel like it's not enough. Lots of politics within the district. It's hard to move up if you're not in leaderships good graces.

    Advice to Management

Start with why, not with what. If you identify a problem, the problem is not that specifically, but rather, why does that problem exist to begin with?

I worked at Best Buy for more than 8 years

    Pros

Fun products and people. Learned a lot about business and retail that can be taken anywhere.

    Cons

Everything got too SOP after a while, and innovation isn't as valued as it once use to be. After the recession, like with many retail jobs, you have to do more work for less money with less people. Thus, the emphasis on quality customer service declined. It was very noticeable and made me have less pride in working for a company that not longer appreciated quality over quantity, but preached otherwise.
