I have been working at Best Buy full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    -Room to move up.
-Sales experience without the stress of commission.

    Cons

-Mediocre base salary (gets better with time).
-Managment can be tough at times.

    Advice to Management

Supply better base pay as incentive and reward employees individually for doing well along with a storewide bonus.

I worked at Best Buy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The discount cost +10% is the best I've seen a anywhere

    Cons

    Literally everything else.

Not enough staff ever, multiple times I would be solo covering mobile and computing for 3 hours at open.

Nepotism and favorites reign supreme, if you are on the good list you walk on water and can get away with whatever you want. I've witnessed managers change someone's timecard so they don't get an occurrence for being late even going so far as to take someone off the schedule if they don't want to make it into work that day.

Crosstraining doesn't create this well rounded sales force, it creates a force that is ignorant in any area they're in because they don't get a chance to become authorities in their area.

Many hats same pay, if you show you are a good worker you get work piled on above and beyond your normal duties with no extra pay. I was doing the jobs if mobile computing and home theater and wasn't making more than anyone else.

I have been working at Best Buy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good career path and opportunity to earn a decent living for folks without an advanced education. Advancement is predicated on sales productivity, with easy pathways to move up the store-level ladder.

    Cons

If one can tolerate large doses of company koolaide, there aren't many cons. The all in buy in is essential for advancement in the heavily metrixed retail environment

    Advice to Management

Less ADHD with corporate strategies; better strategies for retaining new hires; more consistent application of best practices on the sales floor; more cohesion between warehouse and sales floor on the store level. Continue to streamline multi-channel processes and to focus emphasis on the dot com environment.

I worked at Best Buy full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Company discount was nice on some products. They do make an attempt to have their employees trained properly.

    Cons

They don't care much for their employees. I don't agree with being open on Thanksgiving day. Pay is poor.

    Advice to Management

Many employees spend their entire time at Best Buy wanting to like their job but managers and supervisors take all of the joy out of the job.

    Pros

Friendly people. Good environment with helpful supervisors. They do lots of training to keep you updated on things going on within the company.

    Cons

Expectations do not always meet reality. They are always more than willing to give warnings for things not in your control. Supervisors seem to be there for discipline instead of encouragement and how they can better help you succeed.

    Advice to Management

Be more willing to listen to employees. Make sure you understand concerns and are willing to give encouragement for things people do well.

I worked at Best Buy full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I really enjoyed the team-oriented atmosphere that the company adheres too. It made it easier to get things done. The employee discount was nice.

    Cons

The company tends to employ managers that don't quite understand how each employee has his/her own strengths. Instead of taking the time to find out what those strengths are, they try to create a cookie-cutter sales strategy. This would be a great business plan if every employee was the same, but that isn't the case.

I have been working at Best Buy part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

You learn more about new technology and practice basic selling strategies. The discount is really nice for most items so you can get some cool stuff quickly. The company has been really good at working with my school schedules which change every semester. Most people that work there are smart and fun people to be around.....most.

    Cons

Best Buy expects dedication. They track sales and compare yours against coworkers. If you are not performing, don't expect as a ton of hours. If you plan on making a career out of Best Buy and start at the bottom don't expect to move up in the company quickly. Many managers who have worked up the Best Buy chain spend many years to get there. I've seen people work 4 years to become a supervisor (only $14-16/hr). Very competitive environment to move up in.

    Advice to Management

If you don't know about your departments products and can't sell it then learn how to do it. My store manager has been with Best Buy for four years and cannot sell a computer, TV, or appliance and doesn't know how to process a return. Basic tasks for most employees. Not only do new employees need you there to lead the way but your older employees will respect you more for being a real leader.
