I worked at Best Buy part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The employee discount was great, and the lack of commissioned sales made it lower stress. However, having worked in two different locations, the culture was very different, where one was laid back, and the other high octane.

Vendors give you all sorts of freebies, and there are various contests hosted by companies like Intel, AMD, Microsoft, etc. I have won several free high end computers, computer peripherals, and other accessories from contests and vendor promotions.

If you are working in sales, there is not that much job mobility, which is why many people prefer to move into mobile phone sales or Geek Squad, the latter of which certainly has better pay.

    Cons

Pressure to sell insurance, credit card apps, and other targets
Bonuses are store based, and generally out of reach for the market
Culture can vary significantly by store

I worked at Best Buy full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Friendly coworkers (mostly)
    Upbeat environment
    Lots of opportunities for learning

    Cons

    Rude customers
    Micro-management out the wazoo
Management willing to side with rude customers just for positive ratings
    Unrealistic expectations
    Corporate only cares about numbers

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to the actual sales employees. They run the company. Don't just put up ever-changing goals, and only say something when they DON'T meet them.

I can tell Mr. Joly cares, but he needs to work a day in the average sales consultant shoes. Try pulling an undercover boss thing.

I have been working at Best Buy part-time

    Pros

Average retail experience, very good for college students who are there to make a quick paycheck.

    Cons

Due to a contract made with Citibank, Best Buy will be forced to pay a penalty if not enough credit cards are signed for. While this may depend on location, sales people who lie about what the credit card offers are not a rare sight due to the favoritism that managers who profit off a good signup rate will show to them. I personally could barely stomach it so I left and reported those corrupt salespeople to CFPB.

    Advice to Management

Drop the aggressive tactics in order to sign more credit cards/walk away from the contract entirely, though due to those morally bankrupt sales guys, it's too profitable to do so.

    Upgrade the computers.

I worked at Best Buy part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good entry level sales job to learn in, friendly coworkers, good opportunities to move up. Discount CAN be nice.

    Cons

Starting pay isn't to bad but because they focus on a no commission structure can be hard to work with. Benefits usually only come with full time. Training was very lackadaisical. I was fine with working holidays but others may have difficulty with that.

    Advice to Management

Our management was excellent, focused on trying to get people to excel in sales even though training is not exceptional. CEO trying to compete with other online companies is pretty cool too.

    Pros

Start in warehouse or front lanes and then work on getting promoted to manager to tell the sales people how to sell.

    Cons

Don't shine at store 298 the secret is to be thoroughly mediocre if you want to get a promotion.
