I worked at Best Buy (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very busy work during the holidays, Black Friday was a mess, customers are turned off by sales approaching them. Assisted people with their phone plans, phone accessories, and computers.

    Cons

Very Low pay, and no benefits, management pressure people to upsell customers and offer extra accessories.

    Advice to Management

Teach your sales people to NOT talk and act and pressure customers like used car salesmen do.

I have been working at Best Buy full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Killer discount on most items, awesome accommodations, for the most part you are allowed to approach your days on the sales floor however you want.

    Cons

Some departments have absurdly high revenue goals, and when you don't hit them they will make you hate your life. Management is very clear that they will protect their own interests before protecting or standing up for you. Even if you end up within a single percent of their goal or miss on a single metric it will still land you in underperformance. A meeting at the end of every month for those who don't hit performance metrics. At these meetings, you are told you are doing terrible at your job and compared to those who are hitting their targets. Even though those associates may be from other areas with much lower goals or work far fewer hours. They try to scare you by telling you there are no other jobs out there and that Best Buy is your only option. Overall Best Buy is attempting to get commission like results from a staff that is for the most comprised of mostly part-timers and people under 30 working their way through school. The low pay, when compared to the level of input they force out of you, isn't worth it, which is why they have an absurdly high turnover rate.

    Advice to Management

Realize that people are more than just metrics at the end of the month. I have seen too many talented associates become alienated by management and burned out only to end up leaving. Best Buy has a way of pushing real talent away.

I worked at Best Buy part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great discount on proprietary Best Buy products, Insignia, Rocketfish, etc. etc. Fairly relaxed group of coworkers and supervisors.

    Cons

No faith in inventory system, lackluster training, not commission but sales are tracked and you're still pressured to meet a quota, somehow. Lackluster equipment supply, namely price scan guns, only 2 in whole store with only one spare battery. No respect for requests off, at all. Closing means you stay until the store is closed, not until you are scheduled, so if you say you can work until 10, and the store closes at 9:30, especially during the holidays, expect to be there until midnight. Serious disconnect between lower management and staff, very clique-y in that regard.

    Advice to Management

Start by reevaluating the lower management and shift leaders. Next, work on a comprehensive list of skills that any kind of seasonal employee will need to know to get the job done. Product knowledge training is great, but not training an employee how to ring customers out to get their numbers put on sales is not a great idea. Pay more attention to the scheduling requests of your seasonals, especially when scheduling flexibility is a requirement of the employee at the time of hiring. Reevaluate scheduling with respect to closing. If closing takes an hour to two hours, that's fine, just schedule employees accordingly so that they know what they're in for. Lastly, put some faith into the inventory system. System shows one on hand, it better be in that store somewhere, instead of employees just waving it off.
