I worked at Best Buy part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

If you like to talk to people it is a wonderful job. I loved it personally. I will say from friends who've work at other stores, management matters. If you have a good manager like I did it won't be very special, not to forget what I said earlier, if you are very social. Goals are put in place but as long as you're putting forth an effort you'll be okay because most people are there to buy stuff in the first place. Not a bad place to work.

    Cons

Only downside outside of what I have already mentioned is that sometimes you're asked to do other things like inventory and shelf cleanups, which are outside the description of a sales associate. These extra tasks were an annoyance and if I could simply have sold things and that was it, I probably would have stayed longer, also if the pay was better. One last thing is having a set schedule is difficult, you can set your availability and that's nice, aside from the fact one day has to be a weekend day and another 2 have to be closing shifts, but it makes it hard to know exactly when you're working for the week until days prior. Example: I was available Wednesdays after 4pm, but I wouldn't know until that prior Sunday if I in fact worked Wednesday or not.

    Advice to Management

My manager was great but I've heard horror stories about other store managers that should be checked out. Sales Associates do alot and should really be paid more. Also eliminate other tasks outside of selling as much as possible, it's hard to get to them on busy days anyhow.

I worked at Best Buy (More than a year)

    Pros

    - great products/services
    - nice HQ facility with daycare onsite

    Cons

    - no company project management office (at the time I worked there each department did project management their own way, no common methodology or best practices)
    - Accenture has a large presence and they don't always collaborate with consultants from other firms

    Advice to Management

put a PMO in place, establish best practices and eliminate waste/re-inventing the wheel

I have been working at Best Buy part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Amble hours for someone who wants them as long as you don't want full time.

A huge surge of customers will allow you to gain a lot of customer service experience.

    Cons

Don't try to go full time, the spots are rarer than management would like to say.

They put up a board in the middle of the break rooms with our names, it ranked the different salesmen. If you were at the bottom of the board, you would be replaced. Created a vicious working environment during the holidays when the focus should have been on customer satisfaction. Instead we were forced to oversell products, leading to longer checkout times and annoyed customers.

    Advice to Management

Don't create a feeding frenzy, its a horrible sales tactics when you apply it to retail.

I have been working at Best Buy full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The discounts are pretty great and one of the very few reasons I'm still working there. I love the fact that I get to work with the latest electronics.

    Cons

For a full timer that runs the warehouse, pay is a little low in my opinion. There is a constant issue with scheduling and hiring where the warehouse does not have enough people to work efficiently on truck nights, then we are asked why we don't finish in a timely fashion.

    Advice to Management

Communicate with each other better to ensure your employees aren't left high in dry by themselves, especially in the warehouse. Pay your full time employees a more competitive pay and treat them like human beings and not like chess pieces if you want to ensure they stay and the turnover rate won't be so bad.

    Pros

    Access to new tech.
Possibly gain some technical knowledge, the company is good on training its employees.
Learn about people skills and how to sell.

    Cons

It's retail so you will meet some bs and some wonderful peoples.
Most likely the store management will give you a revenue goal, how much you need to sell a month in order to stay with the company.
Also, they will defiantly push you to open as many credit cards to customers as you can.

    Pros

Some good people to work with.

    Cons

Scheduling difficult sometimes. Rating performance based off how much merchandise you sell to people is not a good system, it seems very dishonest. Was not a happy employee, mainly because I felt I always had to upsell someone or try to get them to buy things they didn't need.

    Advice to Management

Relax on the numbers a bit.

    Pros

Employee discount and monthly bonus are pretty great. The people you work with make working here worth it. Flexible schedule is perfect for those who go to school.

    Cons

Sales driven environment. You basically work like you are on commission without the commission pay. Also prepare to work on Thanksgiving Day.

    Advice to Management

Take care of your employees and let us have Thanksgiving back.
