I have been working at Better World Books full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Casual dress/work environment
No experience necessary; every position on the warehouse floor can be taught

    Cons

Low pay minimizes the value of the long hours
Even when a full-time, schedule subject to change on short notice (the day before); supervisors will cut hours on short notice in order to cut costs, in order to make themselves look good, causing you to miss out on the money
    Turnover is remarkably high
Supervisors change the company structure (new processes and ways of working) without taking in employees' input, or considering how it will affect them

    Advice to Management

Value your employees more, at least as much as you value cutting costs

I worked at Better World Books full-time

    Pros

The employees are a great bunch of people to work with. Ten free books a month. The company promotes literacy throughout the world.

    Cons

The pay is low and hours are long. There is not much appreciation for the work that is performed. The good deals for working there have gone away. They used to have service trips for employees from all departments/locations to places the company sends books, but that went away.

    Pros

Tremendous opportunity to learn if you play the politics well.

    Cons

Leadership is top down. The most common response to the question "Why?" is "(Executive) says so." Some of the leadership is excellent, others are in over their heads.

    Advice to Management

Take seriously the commitments you make to the staff. Say what you mean and mean what you say.
