I have been working at Better World Books full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Better World Books is a great company with a great heart. No company is perfect, but BWB has always felt like a family walking through any hard times together. Leadership notices and rewards employees trying to make a difference and to improve themselves and the company. I've worked there for 7 years and have been in many different roles and departments. I'm grateful for the opportunities I've worked hard for and have been offered.

    Cons

Better World Books is a for-profit social venture, so it's kind of half way between the business and charity worlds... meaning, salaries aren't always what they could be if the company didn't have such a strong devotion to making the world a better place. Pretty hard to call that a con, though. You have to be in it for the right reasons, or you probably won't last.

    Advice to Management

BWB is on a great path and continues to get better every day--keep doing what we're doing!

    Pros

Small company environment with room for growth. Love that they promote from within and truly value their employees. We work with libraries, bookstores and non profits...organizations that care about literacy, day in and day out . Good fit for those that value education and enjoy engaging with people from all over. Our company is filled with creative, innovative and inquisitive intellectuals that want to make a difference in their communities and will challenge you to be your best self every day. Great work life balance with remote opportunities.

    Cons

    Diversity in leadership and portfolio

    Advice to Management

Continue exploring the untraveled paths, going where other companies have been afraid to go and beyond, and investing in your employees.

    Pros

Fun, friendly, busy, casual atmosphere with high energy. There is never a dull moment! There are many great opportunities for those that work hard & want to see the company and their team mates succeed. The company emphasizes promoting from within when they can which is great for morale and career development. Associates work hard as a team toward a GREAT mission. There is a lot of change as this company grows & while we are not perfect and ever changing it is exciting to be part of a company achieving great things with a purposeful mission. Ideas are encouraged, appreciated, shared, and often implemented. BWB has character.

    Cons

Young in its lifecycle so still learning/growing and doesn't come without it's challenges. BWB has also demonstrated significant success & continues to head in a positive direction!!

I worked at Better World Books full-time

    Pros

Company has good values and everyone who works there really believe in their mission.

    Cons

Working for the UK side of the business, there is a slight lean to an american business model which at times can make you feel insecure in your role. Staff at times were also treated a bit like school children, which is a bit unnecessary.

    Advice to Management

less micro managing, but generally doing a great job.

I worked at Better World Books full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

BWB UK was a lovely company to work for , the funds raised for non-profits through each sale gave me a sense of pride. MD at the time I worked there was a lovely chap who I respected . Lots of opportunities for grafters. I was promoted within my first year, and in the beginning my ideas where listened too.

    Cons

I left for a couple of reasons , mainly poor pay, a new manager who didn't take the time to understand my motivations and a move to carrying out a sales role on top of my own without being compensated.

    Advice to Management

Better performance management training for people managers , don't let talent leave
