I have been working at Better World Books part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

--I love the company culture. It's a very supportive, friendly environment. I work with interesting people.

--Because the company is fairly small, it's easy to learn things about jobs or departments outside of your own capacity.

--BWB does its best to treat employees well.

--The company has a conscience. It donates incredibly generously to literacy causes and other charities.

    Cons

--Sometimes, there is miscommunication between departments.

--The company is still fairly new (11 years) so growing pains are to be expected, as the company fulfills its potential.

    Advice to Management

Do your best to retain the right people so that the company can continue to grow.

I have been working at Better World Books full-time

    Pros

Better World Books is one of those rare companies actually making a difference in the world. As a triple-bottom line company, they are true to their mission and values. They've donated over $20 million dollars to libraries and literacy organizations around the globe and donated over 17 million books to places where they are needed. The company continues to make positive changes across the business resulting in a better company.

    Cons

Despite serving tens of thousands of customers per day, Better World Books is a well-kept secret hidden behind brands such as Amazon, eBay and Barnes & Noble. There is tremendous opportunity for BWB to get its' name out in communities and the marketplace and share our story with fellow book lovers.

    Advice to Management

Continue to focus on the customer and customer experience.

I have been working at Better World Books (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I have been with World Books for 5 years and I work in the Sales Department. The company has been nothing but supportive and have always had the best interest of me and my career at heart. I have received three promotions in my time and the company has put me in positions that match my skill set. A tremendous added benefit is to work for a company that takes has a wonderful literacy mission baked into its DNA and has returned over $21 million to literacy partners around the world. I have seen first hand the wonderful effect this giving has had on people and organizations.

    Cons

Other than the weather in Mishawaka, IN in the wintertime, I can't think of any.

I have been working at Better World Books full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I've been with Better World Books since early 2008, and have been able to grow along with the company: I started at an entry level position, grew through sales and operations management, and now have a role that I absolutely love. The company has always been supportive of my personal growth plans, and I've been able to align those with the values and the needs of the business. One of the great things about working here, in addition to the people I work with at all levels, is the literacy mission. Even on a "bad day", I'm having a good day. I love that my work connects to improving the human condition in the world at large.

    Cons

The hours can be long, and much is expected of you. However, they are flexible when they see the amount of time and effort you are putting in. Work-life balance can be a struggle at times, but it's usually the individual acting as his or her own driver.

    Advice to Management

Keep working on improving communication within the organization- you're making progress. Also, I'd love to see growth in marketing this great business.

I worked at Better World Books full-time

    Pros

The atmosphere is very casual and friendly. There aren't many places that you can go to work in jeans and a sweatshirt, but here you can. The work is about being productive and getting things done efficiently and effectively.

    Cons

The con of working in the book industry is the fact that there are two main time frames for buying a large quantity of books: summer and fall, when students start school, and winter, when the spring semester begins. This causes employees to work overtime during some months and frequently have to leave work early in other months.
