I have been working at Bicycle Sport Shop full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Competitive salary (for the industry), good benefits, profit sharing, training opportunities, and chance for advancement. Bicycle Sport Shop does not fit the mold of a traditional ma and pa bike shop, where shop rats work so they can get a deal on bike stuff. It is a place where you can have a career and be a professional. The owner is always available to listen to an idea, as are other 'higher-ups'.

    Cons

Store managers and corporate staff are professional and easy to communicate with, but the assistant store managers are often just sales people who got a promotion, and without much management training, they come across as less than professional.

    Advice to Management

Maintain the great work environment that currently exists, and work on some middle-management training.

I have been working at Bicycle Sport Shop full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Laid-back work. Commission can be pretty good depending on the time of the year.

    Cons

Not very flexible with schedule. Little room for advancement unless you've been with the company for decades.

I worked at Bicycle Sport Shop full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Best bike shop I ever worked at. I felt truly valued as an employee, and became a far better rider, retailer, and mechanic than I did at my previous or following bike shop jobs.

    Cons

Was in a department that was a little haywire. I loved it, and adored my boss, but it's not for everybody.

    Advice to Management

Idk, I don't know how to run a bike shop that big.

    Pros

Loved working at the sport shop. Very friendly work environment with lots of opportunity to learn.

    Cons

Not many cons. Loved working at the sport shop. Enjoyed every bit of it.

    Advice to Management

Workers need to be compensated more for their knowledge and work ethic.

I worked at Bicycle Sport Shop full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Massive knowledge base, having been around +30 years. Very fun place to work with awesome fringe benefits and friendly customers/co-workers. Employee ownership plan.

    Cons

Little room for growth. In spite of employee ownership, pay does not reflect profits company is seeing. Say goodbye to your weekends.

    Advice to Management

The environment has come to feel too corporate since the upper management moved out of the store and into their own location.

I worked at Bicycle Sport Shop full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people you work with are amazing! The customers are typically pretty awesome too. Great job for anyone who is into the cycling community. Great job for someone who doesn't need the job as a means of supporting themselves. If you need a part time job to fuel your hobby, this is the place for you.
They provide great lunches occasionally, and good employee perks. It's dog friendly which I personally enjoyed.

    Cons

Bicycle Sport Shop's main goal is to take smaller bike shops out. Free market, call it what you will, but it's not cool. Communication between departments is horrible. The gossip, clique factor here is the worst I have ever experienced. Upper management has a very "you are replaceable" attitude. Very thankless management approach. The in store politics are pretty bad. I worked there full time for a year, then dropped down to part time for another year, then bowed out. It's too much drama for too little pay. If you aren't one of the cool kids, your work life there is pretty bad.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to communicate information to employees with the absence of intimidation. Really appreciate your employees. And make sure inter departmental communication is improved.

    Pros

Great co-workers, good pay, definitely some room for growth

    Cons

Not many come to mind. It can get a little busy at times but that's good for job security!

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work

I have been working at Bicycle Sport Shop full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good exposure to reps in the field
    Most Colleagues are great
    Discount

    Cons

Never get pay raises unless you complain/Pay is not great for expected knowledge
    Never get reviews
Little to no chance for advancement
Inconsistent rules - different treatment for everyone
    Upper management is disconnected

    Advice to Management

Pay people what they are worth
Rules and expectations for hourly employees should be the same for management and corporate employees
Management should practice what they preach - if employees are responsible to uphold everything in the handbook, they should be held accountable for upholding their part

    Pros

The people are very friendly, helpful, and always willing to assist you. The compensation is great and there is ample opportunity to quickly move up the ladder.

    Cons

Sometimes dealing with multi tasking of different customers can be a difficult challenge, but at the same time it is not too difficult to manage.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing. Everything has lead to running a very successful and manageable store, that I hope to see continues to do well in the future.

    Pros

great deals on bike products, cool managers

    Cons

large shop which makes it tough to focus your product knowledge, no training, on your feet on a concrete floor the entire shift, very bottom-line profit focused

    Advice to Management

provide better training, have employees focus on specific areas
