More Pros and Cons

  1. "Great for part timers in college or fresh out looking for experience. Outside of that don't bother."

I worked at Big 5 (More than 5 years)

    Pros

-Generally speaking, great coworkers and store management.
-Flexible for part timers. Never had a requested day off declined.
-Good job to get you through college or a transition in life.
    -Discount is decent

    Cons

    -Lack of upward mobility
    -Upper management micromanages store managers.
-Ultra conservative dress code. For males, you dress like a professional yet you are not paid like one and have to lift heavy/dusty equipment from the back. Expect to rip shirts and pants.
-Compensation: Both part time and managers. They really don't make much. It's hard to use sick leave, holiday hours are horrible, raises are minimal. I worked throughout college here and when I finally decided to go full time as a MT, my wage increased $1.25. I was never given a chance to negotiate my wage when I moved to MT. I just started at the "recommended" wage.
-1st assistant managers can make more than store managers. Even if "it's only for 6 weeks." That should not be a thing.
-Scheduling for managers. Varies week to week.

    Advice to Management

-Treat store management like people and pay a living wage. There is high turn over and Big 5 is not willing to invest in their employees so you see a lot of turn over. They would rather spend time and money training someone new rather than paying managers more money to keep them around.
-Give incentive to part timers. If I could literally make the same wage as anywhere, why should I work at Big 5 and dress like I'm in an office? Give part timers and even management a bonus structure or some commission.
-More flexible with scheduling for management.

I worked at Big 5 full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good pay due to Teamster contract. Decent trucks, lots of exercise unloading floor-loads. Your break is to the second, but it's in a decent cafeteria.

    Cons

Company seems to hate the Union and takes it out on the employees. Managers treat workers like property of the company. Top management doesn't care about what happens in the name of sales. Drivers get fired for 3 minor paperwork errors within 6 months despite years of safe timely deliveries.

    Advice to Management

Stop beating up the work force because they are hard working humans and not parts of a computer.

    I worked at Big 5 full-time

    Pros

I personally did not find too many. No work/life balance, you are expected to work anywhere from the hours of 4am-11pm on pretty much any day of the week. Management gossips, the environment feels like you are back in high school again.

    Cons

very physical job. Really not for most people unless you want to give your soul away.

I worked at Big 5 full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

None. This company has a very poor Outlook and a very negative corporate management style

    Cons

For starters very low pay horrible hours too much work to get done and not enough time allotted I personally watched this company fire a perfectly good manager and not tell him why they were firing him rather than giving him excuses to cover their rear ends true story. Not to mention not enough hours to go around part-time employees get 10 hours a week

    Advice to Management

Become educated about basic retail and systems become educated about basic retail and systems operations and procedures learn how to manage people and put your workers first ahead of your profits and recognize Talent when you have it
