I worked at Big 5 part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The position had flexible hours and kind/understanding management. The required tasks were easily understood and executed. The hiring process was also easy.

    Cons

The typical strains and annoyances of any retail job, namely angry customers. Pay is minimal: minimum wage. The store can be left short-handed if other employees call out.

    Advice to Management

Every manager should make an effort to learn the names of and talk to new employees. Problems at the front dest should be prioritized

    Pros

    Very flexible with school
    Fairly easy work
    Co-worker friendly
    Management is good

    Cons

Stockroom has shoes stacked very high, sometimes seems dangerous. Honestly it would be fine if the store had a little bit more space.

    Advice to Management

Management is doing a great job, working around the schedule of the employees and creating a friendly working environment.

I have been working at Big 5 (More than a year)

    Pros

Working at Big 5 is a great opportunity to develop customer service skills, engage with people from different walks of life and learn logistical and merchandise organization skills. Depending on your situation and your available time, you can move up quickly to a Manager Trainee position and from there to Assistant Manager or higher. Each advancement is an opportunity to learn more skills to better serve you in your career. It is a low stress job with little urgency, and a great "first job" for any younger person.

    Cons

At times, belligerent or angry customers can be a nuisance. For the inexperienced, these interactions can make or break employment. I have known newly hired quit prematurely because they are inexperienced in dealing with these clients. These are opportunities, but they're often difficult to see. Additionally, inconsistent hours seem to be a company wide policy, which can make planning for events difficult and tricky. Maintain a positive relationship with your management.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to your employees, and do everything you can to accommodate their needs. It's difficult, but as a Manager you have to balance their schedules. If an employee has been with you for a while and shows promise, ask them if they would be interested in moving up. Often times, the inexperienced are unaware that their next opportunity is simply a question away. Help them initiate.

Excellent flexibility in scheduling. Great for part-time workers who are just starting out and need experience. Very easy to learn.

    Cons

They have trouble attracting candidates for manager positions and consequentially have a below-average selection.

    Advice to Management

Make the manager trainee and assistant manager positions more attractive to potential workers.

    Flexible schedule
    Great managers
    Fun place to work
Lots of great things to buy there
Such a small place so it's easy to navigate where things are

    Cons

Putting sales ads up every week
Open 365 days a year so no days off
Scheduled less than 20 hours usually
No way to get full time unless you become a manager

    Advice to Management

I think considering this is a sports store we should be able to at least have one day where we can dress in athletics wear but aside from that I'm pretty satisfied working at Big 5

I worked at Big 5 (More than a year)

    Pros

Great people, flexible schedule, relaxed work environment, promote from within whenever possible.

    Cons

Some managers are incompetent, took too long to fire sorry employees. Schedule inconsistent, while for LP reasons, still annoying to not know each week what hours you'll get. Pay not that great.

    Advice to Management

When employees become burdensome on the rest of the team take care of their removal quickly.
