    Pros

    -Great people
-Good products, it's much easier to sell sporting goods than many other things
    -flexible about days off
    -decent pay

    Cons

I really had no complaints about Big 5. I loved my manager and my coworkers and was sad when I had to leave.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work: keep promoting and keep encouraging your employees. Make sure to hire good people for the job!

    Pros

I was always able to modify my schedule as long as I gave two weeks notice or more. The managers were in most instances excellent and the workload is distributed evenly. The job is not stressful and coincided very well with my time in college. The store managers are autonomous and do not need continuous updates from corporate to complete their jobs. The employees are not paid on commission so there is a teamwork atmosphere which inspires long standing employees to teach new employees about the most effective ways to accomplish the job.

    Cons

The pay is not excellent, but it adequately reflects the freedom given in determining the hours you desire to work, and the amount of work required. The hours are sparse, so working two jobs or working specifically to gain extra income is suggested. Formal training is sufficient to complete the required job, but does not give much insight into the specific products which you are required to sell. Employee discounts are not much better than those the customer receives, and are not adjusted regionally to account for tax differences.

    Advice to Management

Put more emphasis on teaching employees about specific items in the store, and increase the employee discount to encourage the employees to purchase and learn more about the products.

    Pros

Management is very thoughtful and gives time off when needed.
If you do a good job praise and promotions are easy to get.
Management (at least at my store) was caring and willing to help in any way they could.
Other employees made the job fun.
    Management was fun and approachable.

    Cons

Never busy...could sometimes get very boring. We never had more than 2-3 customers in the store at a time and VERY often went hours with no customers at all. I had a number of full 6 hour shifts with no customers.

The back room was VERY dirty and slightly unsafe for employees. Some shoes in the back were on the top shelf and there was no ladder available that could reach them...you had to climb the shelves.

    Advice to Management

Great company to work for, the only advice I have is to make sure all safety issues are dealt with as quickly as possible.

I have been working at Big 5 full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Work is easy. There is always something to do or some customer to help. Training is there you just got to keep reminding them about it. Most of the time they are worried with getting the ad set up or some other project

    Cons

Training is slow. They won't train you unless you are scheduled for it. Current manager's may see you as a threat so they slow your training down.

    Advice to Management

You will get promoted faster if you get your employee's promoted or at least turn them in to rock stars.

    Pros

Very much a team environment and everyone gets along really well. Upper management is fantastic and always willing to help out their employees.

    Cons

Retail in itself is a hard job. Customers, for the most part, aren't that great.
Sometimes management takes a while to give reviews and raises.
