I have been working at Big 5 Sporting Goods full-time for more than 9 years

      Pros

Super easy work as a manager. Benefits are good.

      Cons

The culture is very bland. Nothing to look forward to when going to work.

      Advice to Management

Brighten the culture. Maybe allow jeans and a polo on the weekends. Favorite team jersey during football season.Company paid pizza parties once a month. Just some suggestions. Make it a fun place to work and the employees just might respond with higher morale.

I worked at Big 5 Sporting Goods part-time for more than 2 years

      Pros

Its a small story so everyone gets to know each other.

      Cons

Base pay is low. Had a year review that went really well but only was given a 25 cent raise (dont expect much)

      Advice to Management

Its a sporting goods store, so maybe dont make your (underpaid) employees where business attire to work.

I worked at Big 5 Sporting Goods part-time for more than a year

      Pros

At the location I worked at was towards the more wealthy side of Las Vegas/Henderson area. So the majority of customers that came in were of the older demographic. That being said, we sold a lot of walking shoes, tennis rackets, pickleball sets, etc. We we’re also smooshed between 3 highschools and 3 middle schools, so we also saw our share of team sport players. Overall, my time at Big 5 Sporting Goods was fantastic....

      Cons

Some cons would be : •Carpets need to be professionally cleaned.(This is no fault of the store or the management but of the lack of scheduling with the, “higher up’s”. • Technology in the store was outdated.

      Advice to Management

Some advice to management/corporate : • Employee recognition is needed to keep the moral of employees up. Either through one on one conversations on how to make the workplace better for either sales sake or the wellness of the employees. The sales see a lot and gather a plethora of ideas to improve the workplace. Simply listen to sales associates and cashiers.

I have been working at Big 5 Sporting Goods full-time for more than a year

      Pros

Great insurance Work well with my school schedule

      Cons

The list of things they want you to do is almost endless. As you stay with big 5 do not expect any sort of substantial raises. They do not have any intentions of trying to keep their employees. If you come to work for Big 5, plan on it only being a stepping stone to jobs that are more rewarding both financially and emotionally.

      Advice to Management

Stop focusing on your share holders and take a look at your employees, they are the ones who make the sales on a daily basis. Stop focusing on e-teams and instead fix your pos system and the way your data base searches are set up. So much wasted time is on trying to find items that are missing tags, the search function should be much simpler. I worked with employees who had been with big 5 for 5 years and never got...
