"Creative innovative business about to stumble."

    Pros

Creative ambitious innovative people, with great ideas for innovative new products.

    Cons

Too many mergers & acquisitions leading to uncertainty in careers and final location of work place. There is a mass exodus of really talented people quitting due to this uncertainty.

    Advice to Management

Don't relocate the business to Ohio. In this day and age of multinational businesses with multiple business units headquartered around the globe, there is no reason to loose such a talented group by moving the business to Orrville, OH.

I have been working at Big Heart Pet Brands full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Big Heart Pet Brands has a progressive culture, a diverse workforce, great pay and employee benefits. Work/Life balance is desirable. A great fit for dog and cat enthusiasts.

    Cons

As with many manufacturers the organizational structure has been constantly evolving with the change in strategy to focus on the Pet Business, the sale of the DelMonte Canned Food portfolio, and then being acquired by JM Smucker.

    Advice to Management

Integrate some kind of corporate team building into all locations on a regular basis. Everyone works very hard and its easy to get too caught up in the business. Effective teams are built on trust at all levels.

    Cons

Need more staff, a lot of overtime for salaried employees.

    Advice to Management

Hire more permanent employees rather than temps.

    Pros

People care about the purpose of the company and work together well. There is much collaboration and people come together to challenge obstacles.

    Cons

Environment unsettled due to frequent acquisitions and divestitures. Sometimes hard to focus without knowing for sure what the future holds besides growing the brands.

I have been working at Big Heart Pet Brands full-time

    Pros

Pay and benefits are good. Plenty of overtime available

    Cons

Company culture either doesn't really exist, or doesn't make its way down to the hourly level in manufacturing and distribution facilities. Maintaining a work/life balance is difficult when management constantly makes it clear that they do what works for them, even when it violates the very standards they put forth. Hourly employees can expect to have their shift/hours changed without ample notice, and for management to play favorites when awarding bids and promotions (instead of awarding the best candidates). Rules and procedures only seem to exist to provide unchecked latitude for senior management, as they only follow them when they choose to.

    Advice to Management

Be honest and transparent. Paying lip service to being ethical and fair is not the same as actually being ethical and fair. There are plenty of intelligent and capable employees who keep their mouths shut and keep doing what they are told despite being subject to being constantly lied to, but that doesn't equate to a lack of awareness to what is going on behind the scenes.

    Pros

The company was formed out of the divestiture of the Del Monte brands leaving behind solely the pet food brands. We tagged ourselves a $4 billion start-up and it felt that way as the company sought to innovate its brands, its internal systems and operations.

    Cons

It was a short term play guided by the ever present hand of private equity firm that had acquired the business which was executing along a punch list to sell the company to the highest bidder which turned out to be Smucker's - a company that seems to be a fine organization.

    Advice to Management

Continue to innovate products and internal processes and systems. Innovation and bold vision and goals makes for an engaging place of work.

I worked at Big Heart Pet Brands (Less than a year)

    Pros

Fantastic team overall with the exception of the one junior assistant that I worked with. Problem causer. Have never seen anything like it. The rest of the team is stellar.

    Cons

Just the one idiot that I mentioned above who seemed to only live to create problems where problems didn't actually exist. Extremely immature and I'm honestly surprised that this person still have a job.

    Advice to Management

Mgmt is excellent. The CEO is pretty much the best I've ever seen. Nice guy, funny and down to earth. Dave West is an A +.
