    Advice to Management

Dont cut your employees hours during the holidays leaves your employees angry and feeling unappreciated

I have been working at Big Lots full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good discount. Twenty percent. Then three or four times a year you get thirty.

    Cons

Lot of pressure for perfection. Not enough hours to do your job, unless someone is coming into town for a visit and suddenly they come up with payroll.
High turnover rate due to low pay and no chance for advancement and the company is fine with this .Instead of trying to make the stores better with well trained people they would rather have high turnover with lower paid employees. There is no support mechanism if you are assigned to a store where the managers are not fulfilling their responsibilities. The company is more interested in throwing blame than getting to the heart of the matter.

    Advice to Management

Stop threatening people with "corrective action"! If you are going to raise money for charity, then figure out creative ways to raise the money. Don't threaten managers with "corrective action" because they cannot get donations.

I have been working at Big Lots part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

You get to meet some nice people

    Cons

Pay/ raise. When the yearly review is done expect to get pay increase 10-35 cents, even with a great review they don't value employs. Never have a set Schedule all ways random. Managers- they often hired outside manager that has no experience and that have to be trained rather than promoting from within. Hours a week (4-22) if you're not a cashier, lack of benefits. Cant really move up because they get manger from outside. Only hire part-time so they don't have to give you benefits. Cut employee hours all the time so sometimes there are only 2-3 employs in the whole store.

    Advice to Management

Get a set schedule so people actually show up for their shift and so people can make some plans in their schedule. Having a second job is hard with a schedule that never the same. Don't schedule people to close one day and open the next.
Promote from within and give better raise

I have been working at Big Lots part-time

    Pros

This part time position offers flexibility and allows you to choose your availability. It would be great for students or those who want to work around another job.

    Cons

The pay is not great. Although they do have basic training online at work for new hires, most changes or new rules are not shared by managers directly to employees and may or may not get passed down by other employees. Understaffed many times.

    Advice to Management

Do a better job communicating with your employees about changes. Be more selective in the type of people hired that want to do a good job and are not going to quit 2 weeks after hiring. Pay better raises to those who are good employees.

    Pros

Good first job for learning basics. Easy job as a first job. Getting time off was no issue even when I had only been there for 3 months at the time

    Cons

Manager yelled at me in front of customers and I was given poor training with little to no hands on training.

    Advice to Management

Make sure you are giving your employees adequate hands on training.
