    Pros

    + Fun culture, young environment

    + Dress code is lenient

+ Office is in a convenient location (near major highway)

    Cons

    - Employees are fleeing en masse. Even long time employees are abandoning ship, along with their years and years of experience. I have a feeling things are going to get even worse before they get better.

    - Management decisions are made only to benefit the Venture Capitalist firm who owns BigMachines. Which means employee happiness is not taken into account whatsoever when changes are made. Even little things like cutting our food budget, or removing stock options.

    - Regarding my second point, the venture capitalist firm fired most of the founders of the company and replaced the entire senior management team with their own set of cronies. That would explain why management doesn't seem to care or listen to the employees. And on the flip side of things, the employees have little respect for this new management team. So far, they haven't proven or earned respect.

    - Low salaries, as many other people have mentioned.

    - And morale is as low as its ever been in the 5+ years I've been here. And as I mentioned earlier, its only going to get worse before it gets better. There is a reason so many people have been leaving lately.

    Advice to Management

I understand there is no loyalty in business. You are not required to keep your employees happy. But happy employees work harder for you. Low morale employees produce low quality work. And right now, the company morale is very, very low.

    Pros

Hires people for some roles without any experience if they are willing and able to learn. The benefits are fantastic and the people are great. Everyone is extremely friendly and helpful which makes you feel comfortable and welcome. The work is challenging and fast paced, but they encourage taking time out for yourself (the ping pong table helps).

    Cons

The pay is below average, but considering they will hire you with practically no experience is worth it. I haven't found a place that will do this and getting a lot of great experience is a fine trade off.

    Advice to Management

Make sure your team knows how much you appreciate them. A little bit, really goes a long way. Without your team there would be no BigMachines.

    Pros

    - The work has a comfortable pace - things move along smoothly with adequate time for planning. Deliverables are not rushed.
    - The office itself is not bad - free drinks and coffee.
    - Management recognizes ability and rewards it with greater decision-making power and less hassle.

    Cons

    - BigMachines makes little effort to retain good employees. The typical career path is to join BigMachines, work for 1-3 years, and then leave for a better salary elsewhere.
    - Climate control shuts down at 5pm sharp - if you sit near a window, you will probably want fingerless gloves to have at your desk in the winter if you work later than
    - Management recognizes ability and rewards it with greater responsibility but no additional money.

    Advice to Management

Realize that your best developers can leave whenever they feel like it. If it's easier to get a job offer at the salary you desire than to get the equivalent raise at your current job, you'd be a sucker to stick around. The *direction* of the company is good, but the future is not bright if this problem is not solved.

    Pros

+ Co-workers are all very intelligent

    + The company is growing

+ Leader in their space with potential to really accelerate in the near future

+ Somewhat flexible work hours - some come in at 6:00, others get in at 9:30 and employees are treated like adults... just need to put in the hours and it's up to you how you want to schedule it.

    Cons

-upper management thinks they are above the rest of the company - would even use the words "arrogant" and "pompous."

-recently a private equity group has taken over control of the company and is completely void of caring about employees' well-being... so salaries are low and won't be getting better anytime soon... unless you are one of their chosen "favorites."

-a few disturbing cases where promotions/raises are not based on merit or experience at all. Let's just say that if I were a woman, I would think twice about joining the org at the risk of becoming objectified by the upper management.

    Advice to Management

    1) Get over yourselves - you put your pants on one leg at a time, just like everyone else.
    2) If you start a culture of non-merit based raises and promotions, people will lose respect for you... which has already happened in some cases.
    3) If you get a chance to bring back the old management team members, I would do it. People trusted them & had much more respect for them.

    Pros

-The company is growing fast! BigMachines is rapidly growing and has been since I joined over three years ago. All of this rapid growth means more and more opportunities for the employees. Lots of potential for upward mobility and for career development. The management is very supportive of employee development whether that means going to conferences, taking classes or doing additional training.

-I love my co-workers! Pretty much every person hired is extremely smart and hard working, not to mention fun. Because of that, the dynamic is more like working with your friends than just co-workers.

-Laid back work environment with a work-hard/play-hard mentality. Free food and soda in the kitchen, weekly team lunches on Friday. Everyone works hard to get projects done on time but we are treated like adults with our own way of working. So, working from home occasionally is accepted by most teams, and schedules can be semi-flexible.

-Nothing is set in stone. If you have a great idea for how something/anything could be better in the organization, management listens. Seriously. This just doesn't happen in most companies.

    Cons

-The company is growing fast! With growth, comes frustration too. The work load can get out of hand. Hiring just can't happen fast enough and so some people feel like they are underwater with projects. The career development that is so sought after can also add to the work load.

-The company is undergoing some serious changes right now, which can be stressful and confusing at times. New processes, new management, new a lot of things. There are definitely growing pains and sometimes it's hard to see the forest through the trees.

-The compensation tends to be on the lower end of the industry spectrum. But, honestly, if it wasn't for BigMachines, I never would have gotten the experiences I needed in the first place to be in the position I am in now.

-I, too, can get frustrated at times. Like some of the negative reviewers on the site, some aspects of working for the company can be frustrating. But the positive outweighs the negative.

    Advice to Management

You can't please everyone, and I agree with a lot of the changes that the company is undergoing. It's for the overall good of everyone involved.

Secondly, the company values start at the top. So I would urge the leaders in the company to "be the change they want to see" in the org, first and foremost.

    2. Intellectually stimulating work
    3. Relaxed attire
    4. Ability to gain a lot of experience very quickly
    5. Career advancement opportunities for those willing to do the work

    Cons

    1. Sometimes work trumps life on the teeter totter of work-life balance
    2. Compensation is a little lite coming in the door
    3. If you have questions, the company isn't mature enough to always provide easy answers

    Advice to Management

To Prospects - BigMachines is a great place to work, and the pros certainly outweigh the cons. It has been an amazing ride growing with this company over the last 4 years. While there are certainly plenty of challenges, those challenges lead to many opportunities for career advancement. I have a feeling that a lot of the negative reviews on this site were left by those that were either unwilling to dedicate themselves or whose dedication yielded little results. This is a new economy, and one must double down on their work ethic or suffer the consequences of mediocrity. BigMachines is in a unique position to attain tremendous growth in the coming years. They are financially healthy, and investing heavily in the product and in their employees. Come along for the ride.

To Management - Please, please keep investing in the product and the people! When communicating the company vision and plan, include timelines and owners. I know a lot of this stuff is still on the drawing board, and maybe it is best to leave it there until the plan is fleshed out a bit more. Keep advancing those that put in the effort, and start creating paths for advancement so people have a clear idea of what needs to be done to succeed.

    Smart and talented team
Open environment. If you have the potential, you would get to do the work that you want to do.

    Cons

Its a place where you work hard and party harder.
It needs adjustment to balance your work life. If you show the potential, management would offer you the flexibility.

    Advice to Management

Programs for Self growth of employees should be designed along with the employee and this need not be related to their work.

    Pros

    - Great people in this company
    - Leader in its industry
    - Fantastic development and Ops team
    - Fully stocked kitchen
    - Alcohol served Fridays (late afternoon)
    - Some great resources
    - Great company meetings weekly (free lunch)
    - Extremely difficult job to get

    Cons

    - No clear career path. Company is constantly changing, so what you may have been told were potential career paths, may be different the next month
    - Ever increasing goals and work load, while trying to find ways to pay you less
    - More of a "figure it out on your own" approach
    - Lower pay than other jobs in that area
    - Workplace morale could be a lot better

    Advice to Management

CEO is great. He has a great vision, and he is a very brilliant, fun, and personable guy. Easily one of the funniest guys I have met. Management could do a better job answering questions or providing guidance. As well as providing employees with information on what to expect for career advancement.
