I worked at Billabong part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

For the most part a fun environment to work with. Honestly helped with sales techniques. Loved all my coworkers.

    Cons

Managers were great but top tier managers were way too in your face and rude typically.

    Advice to Management

Don’t forget employees are people, not sales machines.

I worked at Billabong full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Mid-level and below employees are great. Casual work environment. Very Generous Health Benefits. Good discounts to the company's products. 401K is okay, but definitely not great, but they have one.

    Cons

This used to be a great place to work. The new Senior Management that came in destroyed the place. Most long time people left. The morale is in the gutter, and no one really cares. They will stay on the ship until it ultimately sinks, or totally merges with Quiksilver and becomes a mall brand. The mid-level and below employees hate the Senior Management, because they are clueless and heartless. It's truly sad to see what has become of a formerly great place. Once they cut health benefits, people will stream out of there. The pay is not great, an there's no growth, and they always bring in from the outside instead of promoting from within. No training or career support of any kind exists. No skills development besides "Look up videos on the internet", (seriously that was the option they promoted).

    Advice to Management

When the company did well, it was because it was one big family. Once employees were looked at as numbers on a spreadsheet and long time athletes were looked at for ROI instead of as ambassadors, you lost it. You have loyal employees, invest in them. Train them, give them a career path. There is so little growth opportunity there, and all your employees know it. And your recent controversy over how you market/exploit females shows how far you've strayed from what the brand used to be about.

    Pros

    • Working with coworkers around the globe in an exciting and fast paced surf apparel company makes you feel very connected to the success of product and brand initiatives. • Supportive and collaborative work environment within each department. • Every department within the company has a unique fun energy about them. • Everyone is always passionate and focused on the projects they are tasked to. • Newly appointed upper management is steering the company in the right direction. • Laid back work environment where you are responsible for your own work and success. • Great employee discount and benefits.

    I worked at Billabong full-time

    Pros

Good hours, work life balance, clean and safe work environment, decent benefits. Employees care about the products and general well being of eachother. Occasional fun days (beach day, food truck, etc). Also free coffee.

    Cons

One of Billabong's goal as a company is to become one of the "Top Places to Work" in Orange County. Well, if they want to get there they have a very long way to go. I experienced and witnessed blatant sexism, ageism, racism, and of course nepotism. The management is either too inexperienced and immature or they are "industry outsiders" and treat the work environment as if it's super corporate. There's just no balance. The immature managers conspire against the employees who do a good job because they think it makes them look bad. The corporate managers treat creatives like bankers and knock them down when they don't understand monetary parts of the business. There are illegal practices going on as well. Men are paid higher than women doing the same job (there are laws against this now) and they make you use vacation days or unpaid leave when you are sick (even if you have sick days available). If you are older than 35 you will be passed up for promotions, laid off or fired, and replaced with a 20-something. Upper management has a very political feel as well. Employees try to become friends with C-level staff in prefer to "save themselves" and this mentality trickles down. There is a very "every man for themselves" backstabbing culture at Billabong.

    Advice to Management

I am sad to write this review because Billabong was not built on the values and culture that the company currently operates on. I would advise management to thoroughly review the management team by asking lower levels employees their opinions. Also, learn how to retain your top talent inside of getting rid of them so you can look better and save money. Lastly, learn the laws in California and pay women equally to the men doing the same job.
